We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"One of the standout features of StarWind.com is its remarkable ability to seamlessly integrate with Dell systems. This integration provides users with an unmatched level of convenience and compatibility, allowing for streamlined operations within a Dell environment. This compatibility factor alone can save significant time and effort for IT professionals, ensuring a smooth integration process and optimized performance.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""This product now allows us to migrate virtual machines between nodes as if we had a dedicated $100,000 SAN in the mix without the additional cost and management of the SAN.""It provided the much-needed HA on an extremely low budget.""The biggest benefit was that it allowed us to provide SAN services on a limited hardware budget.""The performance of the solution is accurate and concise.""The ability to keep data accessible even in the event of hardware failures is highly valued, as it ensures business continuity.""Virtualizing data infrastructure with StarWind Virtual SAN improves efficiency and reduces operational costs."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"The most valuable feature is that it is something small that can be more easily deployed than a full data center set of servers.""The scalability of the product is quite good overall - as long as you plan correctly from the outset.""Easy to spin up and operate virtual machines without the overhead of managing a storage network.""Offers very good data protection and provides system uptime availability effectively.""Cisco technical support is very skilled. From what I've had to access, there were quick responses and the necessary escalation.""When we use it for VDI solutions, it is very easy to deploy and support.""With our four HyperFlex HX hosts (consisting of processor, memory, and disk), the performance is very fast and we have no problems at all. In all of the five years that we have been using HyperFlex, we haven't needed to increase our budget to buy additional hosts.""The software defines networking, storage, and processing."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Pros →

"We find the initial implementation process simple and straightforward.""The most valuable feature is the set of user tools that are available.""You don't have to spend much time evaluating the hardware. It can be deployed in a short time. The tool is also easy to upgrade.""The product is useful for DR and other things.""Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes is scalable""No concerns regarding the footprint in the data center.""They are heading in the right direction and moving to integrate everything with a hybrid cloud, and moving workloads back and forth.""The tool's most valuable feature is high availability."

Cons
"I would like to see some additional, and possibly clearer, implementation videos with some slower and possibly more detailed descriptions of what the various steps of implementation are for someone who is unfamiliar with high availability and failover clustering in Windows.""A better overall view of the different deployments could be beneficial, although this is difficult due to how flexible the solution is.""While StarWind.com excels in numerous areas, there are a couple of notable functionalities that it currently lacks. One of these is duplication, which could be an invaluable feature for data redundancy and backup purposes. The ability to duplicate data across different storage locations can be crucial for safeguarding against data loss, and its absence is a minor limitation in an otherwise stellar offering.""It is difficult to control all of the hardware components.""The Command Center, a free guest VM for management and monitoring, leaves something to be desired. It could have more accurate real-time information and better reporting visuals, which seem to be an afterthought.""One point for improvement is to increase the performance capabilities of the Windows-based executable as compared to its Linux Controller Virtual Machine (CVM) equivalent.""The main issue we ran into was the documentation. We attempted to set up the product in our test environment by ourselves and ran into several areas of the documentation that were unclear to us.""The system failovers properly on its own without too much worry."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"You have to get the same servers with the same storage; they need to be identical. However, in vSAN or in VMware we don't have to do that. We can just add storage and manage it in the same server.""The initial setup of the Cisco HyperFlex HX platform was medium-level difficult. It's a little bit different from traditional servers. It takes getting used to the learning curve.""The price could be better. I think it's more expensive than VxRail. In the next release, I would like to see a better level of protection and availability with six clients.""One of the biggest problems with HyperFlex HX is that if you want to adjust your solution in terms of processing power, memory, or disk capacity, you have to buy completely new hosts. From a financial perspective, it can be very expensive to do so, and from a legal perspective, there are all kinds of compliance issues we would have to sort out before buying any new solution or application.""The architecture separates data, computing, memory, and storage into different parts.""Deployment on-prem was quite difficult.""Cisco has to continue improve the management tools to provide a better command line interface with more functions. That would be better for administration.""The solution could improve by having more customization."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Cons →

"This product is not sufficiently scalable.""Dell EMC vSAN Ready Nodes is a great hyper-converged system that is a perfect platform for supporting any kind of workload. The only workload that it's not designed to support is big data.""Compatibility with other hardware nodes needs to be improved.""Dell vSAN Ready Nodes must be flexible since it is complex in designing concepts. It needs to improve stability. The product should integrate with the public cloud.""The solution doesn't scale.""The deployment is done by doing it one by one and could be simplified.""There is room for improvement in the maintenance pricing. Maintenance isn't difficult, but the prices are high and ridiculous. Some customers feel it is better to go with a new solution rather than renew this one.""Scalability is an area that could be improved. We are looking at a maximum of 32 nodes now in a cluster, but going to 64 or 128 would be a major advantage."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
