We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The ROI is great on this product.""The ability to choose our own hardware and our own vendors for this was hugely beneficial, as we had pre-existing relationships with vendors we wanted to maintain.""It has allowed me to effectively and confidently manage the maintenance of hosts where I can power off a host and have its VMs migrate to another one.""It provided the much-needed HA on an extremely low budget.""It provides shared storage to multiple hypervisor hosts. Times had changed, however. StarWind Virtual SAN is the “software replaces hardware” for SAN. We have access control and CCTV systems up and running using Microsoft clustering and shared storage""It also provides a high degree of mobility, as the virtual SAN can be moved relatively painlessly between on-site devices and the cloud.""Their support staff is comprised of true experts who can also communicate clearly.""One of the most valuable features is the way it sets up the virtual SAN, because we don't have to buy a separate appliance for storage. It uses the existing storage on the servers, which is definitely a cost savings for us."

"It's very easy to integrate with the ACI network.""The most valuable feature is full integration with Cisco API and UCS, which means you can have complete networking and storage from Cisco.""Offers very good data protection and provides system uptime availability effectively.""It has reduced the time it takes to put the servers in production by half the time.""Cisco technical support is very skilled. From what I've had to access, there were quick responses and the necessary escalation.""The initial setup was straightforward. With our partners and the consultancy that we had, we knew what we wanted to do. Therefore, we didn't have any problems with the installation and parametrization.""The product is stable. No one complains about the stability, which is fabulous.""The most valuable feature is that you can manage the whole cluster from the traffic interconnect."

"One of the solution's strong points is the deduplication capabilities of SimpliVity.""It provides unmatched performance, productivity and reliability.""One of the good features would be the fast backup solution Hyper Converged offers, which is more efficient compared to other vendors.""The HA, which means I have a copy of the VMs always available, and the moment a VM is down, the system tries to power it on again.""Reasonably priced and easy to manage for small to medium size companies that don't have an IT department.""What I really like about this program, is that it needs little space and it works really fast, so it saves us time.""The provisioning is very fast. It’s not a problem for us to achieve the goals of the client.""The most valuable feature is the in-built backup system. The backup speed is also excellent."

Cons
"I would like to see improvements in the documentation area.""StarWind offers the Enterprise-level high availability (HA), deployed and easily configured .maintain and update and with little to no fuss, even the free version is incredibly capable whilst it brings a the cost of a Highly Available HCI solution down to a very cost effective point" Having used Starwind Virtual SAN for many years both for clients and for internal systems it has always done exactly what it set out to do, provide a cost effect way to run a HCI storage platform for almost any hypervisor, but it is most effective with Hyper-V, simple, easy to use, -.software monitoring should be web based to be reachable from any workstation in VLAN.""This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters.""The documentation can be better for the free tier.""I would like to see different levels of support offered.""Proper training sessions should be included with the licensing.""Perhaps more reporting features on the utilization, usage, and performance of the configured high-availability images and underlying physical disks would be helpful.""Sometimes documentation on their site can be out of date."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Some of our customers do not want to adopt the Cisco ACI solution. They want to manage Cisco HyperFlex by integrating it with their own management solution.""The storage layer seems to be a little better on the VMware than on HyperFlex side.""They can't get a POC to work because there are big latencies between the two sites we have. Even though we have a private fiber connection and everything else works well, they can't get the two products to talk to each other. They are not able to build it up. It looks like it's a firmware issue. They said it isn't but now it's looking like it is. I hope we can sort it out.""I would have liked it to be able to back up the system to a cloud, to be able to work from any other place""You have to get the same servers with the same storage; they need to be identical. However, in vSAN or in VMware we don't have to do that. We can just add storage and manage it in the same server.""The utilization needs to be better. It needs more options.""The infrastructure team thinks that there are a lot of issues.""Does not support the stretch cluster, and the interface is not good."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Cons →

"The storage efficiency is weak and needs to be improved.""Providing local technical support and improving the price are areas this service needs to consider improving.""A software-only version of the solution, without the hardware, would be nice.""This solution is very costly.""I would like to see a more intuitive, user-friendly UI.""Though with HPE Hyper Converged, you get everything, the documentation part is very much required, especially if you opt for the solution's subscription-based licensing model.""The price can be improved. We would like to see support for some open source virtualization technology like for example KVM.""In the Hyper Converged environment, some of the brands only support the OS VMware and not Hyper-V from Microsoft or even Red Hat or KVM."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "Cisco is quite expensive, but not in the initial first buy."
  • "Pricing is better if you buy more Cisco products."
  • "The pricing is a bit expensive."
  • "For customers in the private sector, this product can have a very high return on investment."
  • "If you don't look at the costs of the systems, the scalability is quite good."
  • "The price is a bit high. It could be better, but the product is worth the cost."
  • "I would like the pricing to be cheaper."
  • "Comparable solutions with switches, storage, and services are cheaper than HyperFlex. It should be cheaper."

  • "It could be cheaper, everything could be cheaper."
  • "With this solution, I buy everything together, pre-packaged, pre-installed, and in just 15 minutes, it's installed."
  • "The price per value compared to other solutions, like Nutanix and SimpliVity. (We made the deal before approval of HPE SimpliVity deal)."
  • "Pricing with Dell EMC is double the price which I paid for HPE. However, in the end, Dell EMC is double in performance. This is not an apple to apple comparison though, as I have a four node from Dell EMC and a three node."
  • "It is an expensive solution, however. If they could adjust the pricing, that would be helpful."
  • "The solution is too expensive for our customers. The pricing should be lower."
  • "The solution is expensive - not only the hardware costs but server costs too. And the more you scale, the more expensive it gets."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
