We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature are the caching capabilities using the storage class memory.""It's mainly about the storage expansion, like in hyper-converged solutions.""The most valuable feature is that there is no single point of failure.""The initial setup is straightforward.""Its technical support is excellent.""The performance, reliability, and affordability has been most valuable.""The flash ability, in terms of tiering and caching, is amazing"

"The FlexClones make all the management easier for us.""Multiprotocol is the most valuable because Amazon was not able to provide us with access to the same data from Linux and from Windows clients. That was our value proposition for CVO, Cloud Volumes ONTAP.""We use the mirroring to mirror our volumes to our DR location. We also create snapshots for backups. Snapshots will create a specified snapshot to be able to do a DR test without disrupting our standard mirrors. That means we can create a point-in-time snapshot, then use the ability of FlexClones to make a writeable volume to test with, and then blow it away after the DR test.""In terms of administration, the portal which provides the dashboard view is an excellent tool for operations. It gives you volume divisions, usage rates, which division is using how much data, and more. The operations portal is fantastic for the support team.""We are definitely in the process of reducing our footprint on our secondary data center and all those snapshots technically reduce tape backup. That's from the protection perspective, but as far as files, it's much easier to use and manage and it's faster, too.""Unified Manager, System Manager, and Cloud Manager are all GUI-based. It's easy for somebody who has not been exposed to this for years to pick it up and work with it.""This solution has made everything easier to do.""It's very easy to set up, and within 40 minutes, you can apply storage notes in Azure."

Cons
"It is scalable, but only beyond two nodes. If I go for two nodes it's not scalable. I need to build a complete cluster from the beginning if I'm going for two nodes.""The management tool within this solution could be improved. We would also like to be able to access services like Azure when using this solution.""I think the online documentation needs a lot of work and so do the sizing tools.""Documentation management could be improved""The integration is not difficult because there is no GUI, but we need to use a PowerShell command. This makes it difficult to monitor and to see the components' statuses.""It is difficult to get a hardware compatibility certification for the solution.""More optimization could be done in terms of mirroring."

"I would like to have more management tools. They are difficult to work with, so I would like them to be a bit more user-friendly.""I rate the scalability a five out of ten.""The only issue we had lately was that outside our VPC we could not reach the virtual IP, the floating IP. I heard that they have fixed that...""I would want more visibility and data analytics where we can see anomalies within the shares within the GUI.""The DR has room for improvement. For example, we now have NetApp in Western Europe and we would like to back up the information to another region. It's impossible. We need to bring up an additional NetApp in that other region and create a Cloud Manager automation to copy the data... I would prefer it to be a more integrated solution like it was in the NetApp solution about a year ago. I would like to see something like AltaVault but in the cloud.""I would like to see more information about Cloud Volumes ONTAP using Google Cloud Platform on NetApp's website.""The automated deployment was a bit complex using the public APIs. When we had to deploy Cloud Volumes ONTAP on a regular basis using automation, It could be a bit of a challenge.""There is room for improvement in tier one support, especially with potential language barriers and communication challenges."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "With the data center licensing and everything that is connected to that, this solution is relatively costly."
  • "Cost-wise the product is one of the more affordable within the category of products."
  • "The solution is expensive."

  • "Purchasing through the AWS Marketplace was good, but it was a test system, not a real purchase."
  • "We purchased the product directly from NetApp."
  • "The deal with the seller was acceptable; the pricing is reasonable."
  • "The AWS consumer-based pricing model makes it easy for developers to use their credit cards to spin up virtual servers immediately."
  • "Compared to other storage vendors, NetApp, is not always able to compete with their pricing. Yet, we acknowledge the ease of use ONTAP brings with the AWS integration."
  • "They allow a special price if you are working closely with them. Since we have a lot of NetApp systems, we got some kind of discount. That's something they do for other customers, not just for us. The price was fair. In addition to the licensing fees, you're paying Amazon for your usage..."
  • "The standard pricing is online. Pricing depends. If you're using the PayGo model, then it's just the normal costs on the Microsoft page. If you're using Bring Your Own License, which is what we're doing, then you get with your sales contact at NetApp and start figuring out what price is the best, in the end, for your company."
  • "In addition to the standard licensing fees, there are fees for Azure, the VMs themselves and for data transfer."
