Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The proactive monitoring of all our open enrollment applications has improved our organization. We have used it to size applications that we are moving to the cloud. Therefore, when we move them out there, we have them appropriately sized. We use it for reporting to current application owners, showing them where they are wasting money. There are easy things to find for an application, e.g., they decommissioned the server, but they never took care of the storage. Without a tool like this, that storage would just sit there forever, with us getting billed for it.""Using this product helps us to reduce performance risk because it shows us where resources are needed but not yet allocated.""Rightsizing is valuable. Its recommendations are pretty good.""I like Turbonomic's automation and AI machine learning features. It shows you what it can do, but it can also act on recommendations automatically. Integration with an APM system makes the AI/ML features truly effective. Understanding what the application is doing and the trends of application behavior can help you make real-world decisions and act on that information.""My favorite part of the solution is the automation scheduling. Being able to choose when actions happen, and how they happen...""I like the analytics that help us optimize compatibility. Whereas Azure Advisor tells us what we have to do, Turbonomic has automation which actually does those things. That means we don't have to be present to get them done and simplifies our IT engineers' jobs.""I only deal with the infrastructure side, so I really couldn't speak to more than load balancing as the most valuable feature for me. It provides specific actions that prevent resource starvation. It always keeps things in perfect balance.""The automation and orchestration components are definitely the best part, as you can tell it what it can do and when, and just let it be."

"The most beneficial features for us were the API integrations with various cloud vendors like Nutanix, VMware, AWS, Azure, and GCP. It saved us the effort of doing that work ourselves.""The most valuable feature of Morpheus is its strong integration with vSphere Cloud.""Morpheus is an intuitive solution that is very easy to use.""The most valuable feature for me was cost optimization.""Provides a good automation platform.""The user interface of the application is exceptional.""Morpheus provides a very easy and one-click solution to scaling up and down.""The multi-cloud integrations and the DevOps and operational integrations are the most valuable. Morpheus platform is a centralized set to manage different clouds and your on-premise platforms. It does a very good job of what it is designed to do. It is very good in terms of features. It is extremely stable and easy to install. It is also very scalable. Their support is also extremely good."

More Morpheus Pros →

"With a single click, we could set things up and initiate them.""It is quite easy to deploy.""What's best about OpenNebula that people like is that it's easy to deploy. It's also easy to manage. It's interesting because people choose OpenNebula over other solutions because of the ease of management.""OpenNebula has very good integration with SAP Storage.""The service feature appeals most to us, thus it is the most valuable.""It makes maintenance very easy and stress-free for our teams.""The ability to use it almost like a public cloud for an organization is a big asset, as it will create a value proposition and can control costs in a great way.""For the entire data center, as a private cloud, I believe that user management, expert management, and the virtual data center is completely magic for the users."

Cons
"Recovering resources when they're not needed is not as optimized as it could be.""After running this solution in production for a year, we may want a more granular approach to how we utilize the product because we are planning to use some of its metrics to feed into our financial system.""The GUI and policy creation have room for improvement. There should be a better view of some of the numbers that are provided and easier to access. And policy creation should have it easier to identify groups.""The planning and costing areas could be a little bit more detailed. When you have more than 2,000 machines, the reports don't work properly. They need to fix it so that the reports work when you use that many virtual machines.""It would be nice for them to have a way to do something with physical machines, but I know that is not their strength Thankfully, the majority of our environment is virtual, but it would be nice to see this type of technology across some other platforms. It would be nice to have capacity planning across physical machines.""Turbonomic can modernize the look and feel, making it more user-friendly to access and obtain information.""It can be more agnostic in terms of the solutions that it provides. It can include some other cost-saving methods for the public cloud and SaaS applications as well.""If they would educate their customers to understand the latest updates, that would help customers... Also, there are a lot of features that are not available in Turbonomic. For example, PaaS component optimization and automation are still in the development phase."

More IBM Turbonomic Cons →

"The tool could support virtual network functions better. It is really good at doing enterprise-type of things, but one of the things on which we're working with them is loading very complex virtual machines with it, such as Juniper SRX routers. It needs to support more complex virtualized resources a little bit better. Aside from that, it is a terrific tool. We really like it.""There is room for enhancement in integrating Morpheus with other solutions.""I faced a few problems while deploying.""We had to put in much effort ourselves since Morpheus's support wasn't always available to help us.""The product has become overly complex. The biggest problem is that we find a bug, they fix the bug, but then another one pops up. We can never really deliver on the vision we had using Morpheus.""Morpheus is working hard on creating an integration framework due for release in Q2 2021 which will allow clients to create their own interfaces and integrations into any 3rd party product that has a full-function API. Morpheus is also heavily focussed on enhancing the container management side to compete head-to-head with Openshift and CloudForms in Q3 2021.""We've been facing some challenges with Morpheus due to its design for public cloud usage.""The service is limited and somewhat lacking."

More Morpheus Cons →

"There are small things that are hard. For example, making sure that it is going to be installable on public clouds.""The storage feature that they have is a bit confusing.""It should have a simple REST API like most other tools. It's the industry standard format. An XML-RPC API gives you an XML document that you have to convert and then do something with that. REST API endpoint provides outputs in a JSON document. I would also like to see support for user data or heat templates, which OpenStack offers, but OpenNebula doesn't have this yet.""They should add more features like object storage.""As with all enterprise software licensing, the pricing is not intuitive and must be negotiated; grandfathered contracts are better than anything offered today.""They have been saying for the past two and a half years that they would develop a feature to hot-add RAM and CPU, but it does not work.""Hosting platforms are limited so the deployment process needs improvement.""The UI, monitoring, and alerting could benefit from further improvements."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
  • "Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
  • "What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
  • "Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
  • "You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
  • "Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
  • "If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
  • "It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."
  • More IBM Turbonomic Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Licensing is on an annual basis, and it is upfront for the year. There is no extra cost unless you want additional support or specific deployment packs."
  • "The license is based on the number of virtual machines that Morpheus is managing. So, it is a pay-as-you-grow model."
  • "Initially, the license may seem like a good deal, but as we grow, it becomes costly."
  • "The solution is cheaper if you have less number of servers, but it becomes very expensive for a large number of servers."
  • "Morpheus doesn't directly support cost optimization, but its API integration can facilitate resource optimization. It doesn't dynamically optimize resources like an aeronautic system would; it operates step by step."
  • More Morpheus Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "VRA is very expensive but OpenNebula is free."
  • "We use the Community Edition, rather than the Enterprise Edition."
  • "OpenNebuoa has recently come up with a new subscription model that is economical and a lot of new customers are choosing this as it is an easy subscription model."
  • "The solution is open source so is free."
  • "The licensing for OpenNebula used to be free, but now it's no longer free. A customer contacted me asking to move to another provider because of the changes in the licensing terms for OpenNebula. I have no information on how much the OpenNebula license is because the customer pays for it, and I only do the integration."
  • "OpenNebula gives good value for money."
