We performed a comparison between Proxmox VE and VMware Workstation based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Proxmox, VMware, Microsoft and others in Server Virtualization Software."The most valuable feature of Proxmox VE is the speed. Additionally, I can modify the solution if needed because it is open-source and the integration of any kind of API and monitoring is hassle-free."
"The ability to back up a host and keep it running is valuable."
"KVM hypervisor is a valuable part of the solution."
"We are happy with Proxmox VE. We use it as part of a cluster."
"Ease of use, HA, internal 100gbps Virtio network, built-in backup (don't pay $1200 Veeam licence), support for multi-monitors on multiple VMs in KVM, no need to RDP in the VMs to do your stuff (Win, Linux and Mac with SPICE and using 6 screens here (11520*2160)."
"Proxmox VE has many containers. You need to download the image and do basic configuration, after which it is operational within a few minutes. The solution provides many containers that are light in use and don't use a lot of memory. You don't have to spend a lot of resources."
"The template option allows us to build a desktop in a VM, then quickly deploy as a linked clone."
"Proxmox allows us to achieve affordable performance while keeping high levels of data protection and flexibility."
"Because the setup is so easy, this is a solution that can be used at a moment's notice."
"The product is really easy to use."
"The performance is good."
"The most valuable features of VMware Workstation are the DirectX support, you can run Microsoft Hyper-V in virtual environments which is good for me to test different installations. Additionally, you can set up different VLANs, and overall it is a complete solution."
"VMware Workstation allows multiple operating systems in the same physical machine."
"The product works well."
"The most valuable feature of the VMware Workstation is the ease to create a development environment. When you have different ongoing developments, you often need to create a lot of different development environments. With this workstation solution, you can have a development environment for all the things you develop."
"I like that it's easy to use. It's easy to deploy virtual machines. You have to insert your ISO and the image of your OS and configure it. They provide a step-by-step guide, and you have to follow it. In the end, you have to start the machine, and that's all you have to do. I liked that they synchronized the mouse, keyboard, and everything. When you finish the installation, it directly links to your laptop. This makes copying and pasting things from my laptop inside the virtual machine easy."
"It's one of those things for me to move things on to the cloud. It's not so easy. I am always on the laptop and have to monitor that because if you want to make strides; you need to stay online."
"Lacking in enterprise features."
"The Windows drivers could be easier (unlike manually installing Ballon, QEMU and optionally SPICE, VIRTio, etc.)"
"The availability of the solution could be a bit better."
"We find it difficult to find the root cause of the issues."
"The solution can be improved by making it more secure and scalable."
"I would like to see more monitoring in the next release of this solution."
"We are using servers individually, and we are looking for a reliable application that allows us to hop between servers with high availability."
"The big issue that we've always had with VMware, was the disparity between what was presented for a Windows-based client and a Linux-based client. The Windows client was always two or three releases ahead of the Linux client. We always wanted VMware to change and improve the feature sets between the client connector on Linux and on Windows."
"The support can be improved."
"VMware Workstation’s scalability could be improved."
"The interface is a little wonky and needs to be improved."
"The price of VMware Workstation could improve."
"The product is outdated."
"They could include official support for macOS virtualization within VMware Workstation."
"Lacks the ability to clone onto another system rather than starting from scratch."
