We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We have a system where our developers automate machine builds, and that is constantly running out of resources. Turbonomic helps us with that, so I don't have to keep buying hardware. The developers always say, "They don't have enough. They don't have enough. They don't have enough," when they just configured it improperly. Therefore, Turbonomic helps us identify configuration issues on their side so it doesn't cost me money on the other end to buy resources that I don't really need.""The tool provides the ability to look at the consumption utilization over a period of time and determine if we need to change that resource allocation based on the actual workload consumption, as opposed to how IT has configured it. Therefore, we have come to realize that a lot of our workloads are overprovisioned, and we are spending more money in the public cloud than we need to.""The automated memory balancing, where it looks at whether it's being used in the most efficient way and adds or takes away memory, is the best part. If it didn't do that, it would be something that I would have to do. We have too many machines for one person to do that. The automation helps me in that it is done in a really efficient way and a balanced way because of the policies. It really helps.""Rightsizing is valuable. Its recommendations are pretty good.""We have VM placement in Automated mode and currently have all other metrics in Recommend mode.""We can manage multiple environments using a single pane of glass, which is something that I really like.""The proactive monitoring of all our open enrollment applications has improved our organization. We have used it to size applications that we are moving to the cloud. Therefore, when we move them out there, we have them appropriately sized. We use it for reporting to current application owners, showing them where they are wasting money. There are easy things to find for an application, e.g., they decommissioned the server, but they never took care of the storage. Without a tool like this, that storage would just sit there forever, with us getting billed for it.""The biggest value I'm getting out of VMTurbo right now is the complete hands-off management of equalizing the usage in my data center."

"SolarWinds Virtualization Manager is a great tool that is easy to use...It is a stable solution.""The most valuable features of SolarWinds Virtualization Manager are the non-Windows servers' monitoring and capacity planning."

More SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Pros →

"Veeam One is easy to use. You don't need to get very technical or specific class training. Anyone can start using it.""The most valuable features are the notifications, which give us failure alerts for some infrastructure within the backup, and the reporting is excellent.""The solution is really easy and straightforward to use.""I don't have to go back and forth between different applications to get the report I need.""The tool is a stable backup solution.""The initial setup was straightforward.""The feature that we have found most valuable is its traffic plan. The traffic plan is very good.""The monthly reports come complete with graphs and summaries, it's really helpful."

Cons
"If they would educate their customers to understand the latest updates, that would help customers... Also, there are a lot of features that are not available in Turbonomic. For example, PaaS component optimization and automation are still in the development phase.""Remove the need for special in-house knowledge and development.""We don't use Turbonomic for FinOps and part of the reason is its cost reporting. The reporting could be much more robust and, if that were the case, I could pitch it for FinOps.""Some features are only available via changes to the deployment YAML, and it would be better to have them in the UI.""The planning and costing areas could be a little bit more detailed. When you have more than 2,000 machines, the reports don't work properly. They need to fix it so that the reports work when you use that many virtual machines.""It would be good for Turbonomic, on their side, to integrate with other companies like AppDynamics or SolarWinds or other monitoring softwares. I feel that the actual monitoring of applications, mixed in with their abilities, would help. That would be the case wherever Turbonomic lacks the ability to monitor an application or in cases where applications are so customized that it's not going to be able to handle them. There is monitoring that you can do with scripting that you may not be able to do with Turbonomic.""It would be nice for them to have a way to do something with physical machines, but I know that is not their strength Thankfully, the majority of our environment is virtual, but it would be nice to see this type of technology across some other platforms. It would be nice to have capacity planning across physical machines.""The old interface was not the clearest UI in some areas, and could be quite intimidating when first using the tool."

More IBM Turbonomic Cons →

"The problem or issue with the product is related to its pricing.""The SolarWinds Virtualization Manager platform in general can have a better response time in the performance."

More SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Cons →

"I've never considered what improvements Veeam needs, and I haven't asked our customers if there is any room for improvement. As the manager, I only see the reports.""Veeam ONE could be improved if it had a better data recovery feature.""Its reporting feature could be better.""Not highly customizable.""Veeam One has its ransomware monitoring, but it's based on static parameters.""When you have to renew the licenses you sometimes have some trouble getting rid of the old one and reassigning it to the new one. That's an aspect that could run smoother and could be better.""There is a bug that prevents enabling the restore button, which is hectic.""I would like the solution to have better integration with other hypervisors and cloud features that are not exclusive to VMware."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
  • "Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
  • "What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
  • "Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
  • "You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
  • "Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
  • "If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
  • "It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."
  • More IBM Turbonomic Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The is an annual subscription needed to use this solution."
  • "The maintenance and support are a part of the package, meaning it is included in the product's price."
  • More SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "For what it does, the price is acceptable."
  • "If you have Veeam Backup and Replication with the essential license then this solution is free. If you were to purchase Veeam ONE by itself it is priced cheaper than competitors."
  • "The licenses are code-based or server-based for Veeam ONE. The last version is 12, and it is host-based, I don't like to move to a code-based solution."
  • "Veeam has been raising its prices in the last two years, so it's now lacking some competitiveness in pricing."
  • "I have not used the resale license in our testing environments. Sometimes, our customers used the trial license for 30 days and so on."
  • "I don't pay for the solution, so I can't comment on the cost."
  • "The cost is based on the number of core servers."
  • "Our licensing cost is $200 a year."
