We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We like that Turbonomic shows application metrics and estimates the impact of taking a suggested action. It provides us a map of resource utilization as part of its recommendation. We evaluate and compare that to what we think would be appropriate from a human perspective to that what Turbonomic is doing, then take the best action going forward.""The system automatically sizes and moves resources based on the needs of the applications.""I like Turbonomic's built-in reporting. It provides a ton of information out of the box, so I don't have to build panels for the monthly summaries and other reports I need to present to management. We get better performance and bottleneck reporting from this than we do from our older EMC software.""With over 2500 ESX VMs, including 1500+ XenDesktop VDI desktops, hosted over two datacentres and 80+ vSphere hosts, firefighting has become something of the past.""On-premises, one advantage I find particularly appealing is the ability to create policies for automatic CPU and memory scaling based on demand.""I like Turbonomic's automation and AI machine learning features. It shows you what it can do, but it can also act on recommendations automatically. Integration with an APM system makes the AI/ML features truly effective. Understanding what the application is doing and the trends of application behavior can help you make real-world decisions and act on that information.""We've saved hundreds of hours. Most of the time those hours would have to be after hours as well, which are more valuable to me as that's my personal time.""We have VM placement in Automated mode and currently have all other metrics in Recommend mode."

"With Apptio One, the advantage lies in its no-code approach, eliminating the need to write scripts for data retrieval.""Its most significant value lies in its ease of use which extends to both configuration and the subsequent deployment of additional components.""The TBM model and the out-of-the-box reporting are the most valuable features of Apptio One."

More Apptio One Pros →

"The way the dashboard works with the main orchestrator to combine different types of cloud providers is helpful.""The tool helps us to monitor the services provided to customers as a cloud provider. The product is a monitoring solution that helps customers pay for their utilization of services.""The most valuable feature is the metering capability.""The most valuable feature is that it allows us to compare the billing between the clouds.""The most valuable feature is that it has a very easy and adaptive look and feel, compared with some other cloud solutions.""The flexibility is the product's most valuable feature.""This solution has made us aware that we are over-provisioning our virtual machines.""It doesn't take long to develop an automation blueprint. You need about half an hour, and then you can install or deploy it on several systems. That was our first great advantage in the project because we urgently needed to deploy across many different systems."

Cons
"We don't use Turbonomic for FinOps and part of the reason is its cost reporting. The reporting could be much more robust and, if that were the case, I could pitch it for FinOps.""Since the introduction of a HTML 5 based interface, our main - but minor - criticism of a less than intuitive operation managers' GUI would be the area of improvement.""I do not like Turbonomic's new licensing model. The previous model was pretty straightforward, whereas the new model incorporates what most of the vendors are doing now with cores and utilization. Our pricing under the new model will go up quite a bit. Before, it was pretty straightforward, easy to understand, and reasonable.""I like the detail I get in the old user interface and will miss some of that in the new interface when we perform our planned upgrade soon.""If they would educate their customers to understand the latest updates, that would help customers... Also, there are a lot of features that are not available in Turbonomic. For example, PaaS component optimization and automation are still in the development phase.""The deployment process is a little tricky. It wasn't hard for me because I have pretty in-depth knowledge of Kubernetes, and their software runs on Kubernetes. To deploy it or upgrade it, you have to be able to follow steps and use the Kubernetes command line, or you'll need someone to come in and do it for you.""There are a few things that we did notice. It does kind of seem to run away from itself a little bit. It does seem to have a mind of its own sometimes. It goes out there and just kind of goes crazy. There needs to be something that kind of throttles things back a little bit. I have personally seen where we've been working on things, then pulled servers out of the VMware cluster and found that Turbonomic was still trying to ship resources to and from that node. So, there has to be some kind of throttling or ability for it to not be so buggy in that area. Because we've pulled nodes out of a cluster into maintenance mode, then brought it back up, and it tried to put workloads on that outside of a cluster. There may be something that is available for this, but it seems very kludgy to me.""We're still evaluating the solution, so I don't know enough about what I don't know. They've done a lot over the years. I used Turbonomics six or seven years ago before IBM bought them. They've matured a lot since then."

"However, a notable challenge is the requirement to obtain consistent raw data, especially when operating in multiple regions with varying data sets. Each region may have distinct field names or data setups, necessitating the standardization of data before loading it into Apptio One. In Apptio One, there are areas for improvement, particularly in addressing potential bugs. An instance of this is observed when transitioning changes from the development region to the staging or production region. In instances with larger datasets, the calculation process may experience delays. Once the calculation concludes, the process proceeds to the subsequent region, whether it be staging or production.""The solution's reporting layer, advanced conditional formatting, and reporting features could be improved.""Encouraging or providing more out-of-the-box solutions that cater to a wider audience could enhance the overall effectiveness of the application."

More Apptio One Cons →

"I would like to have an easy way of modifying the reference data that is used for the purposes of estimating the total billing.""It's not always easy to find the information you need. You must have a lot of technical experience to find the right location for what you're implementing within the program.""If you haven't established a vSphere cluster and you only have a single server to integrate, you can't deploy any service.""Better integration with other VMware toolsets would be beneficial.""It would be a good idea for VMware to be compatible with the most popular orchestration tools in the market.""The product needs some investment in configuration. I would like to see better and more optimized configuration in the tool's future releases.""The pricing model is complicated and would be more predictable if it were simplified.""There are some kinks to resolve with the Web GUI user interface, as it freezes at times."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
  • "Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
  • "What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
  • "Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
  • "You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
  • "Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
  • "If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
  • "It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."

  • "It comes with a considerable cost."
  • "Regarding the pricing structure for various products within Apptio, such as APE One or APE One Plus, the cost is intricately tied to the selected license. There are two distinct types of licenses available. Opting for the basic license provides access to APT1, while an alternative license, known as APL One Plus, encompasses additional features like Cloudability and other components. The specific features accessible depend on the chosen license."
  • "Apptio One is an expensive solution."
