We performed a comparison between HashiCorp Terraform and SolarWinds Server Configuration Monitor based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Configuration Management solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."Intune's feature that I have found most valuable is its auto-pilot feature."
"It allows our clients to have the confidence to centrally manage policies for security. It helps them in securing the organization from a technology aspect."
"The mobile application management, MAM, is the most useful aspect of the solution."
"One of the main features of the solution is it allows the management of many devices in different ways."
"The tool's most valuable feature is Autopilot."
"The features I found most valuable in Intune are its user visibility and troubleshooting options."
"The most valuable feature is the policy CSPs."
"The ability to block and erase remote devices is valuable to us, especially when those devices are lost."
"The most valuable feature of HashiCorp Terraform is the custom modules."
"The most valuable features of Terraform are leveraging public modules for EKS, KMS, and ECR."
"One of the most valuable features is that it offers the ability to create a VPC, Virtual Private Cloud and VPN connectivity to the VPC can be automated without having to do it manually."
"The most valuable feature of Terraform is the ability to use it as a coding language because it works in a way that's similar to other coding languages."
"This solution is a fast and secure way to provision infrastructure."
"Modules can be reused extremely easily."
"The state file is the most beneficial aspect of HashiCorp Terraform. It enables the retrieval and utilization of a previous state to build upon. This feature is particularly important since it allows for the identification of changes from the previous state, making the state file a critical component of the process."
"The ARM template is very easy to work with, which is a big help to us."
"The product’s alert feature is good. We receive notifications whenever some failures occur in the configuration."
"The most valuable feature of SolarWinds Server Configuration Monitor is version control. For example, if we began on the first of the month and we considered that as the configuration of the server, I could set that configuration as my baseline. On a daily basis, if there was the operations team that did, for example, server patching, the tool will maintain all levels of versions."
"When somebody has a customized application or their own company's application, we cannot deploy that application."
"The reports that are generated aren't so great. They don't give a lot of meaning so far, but that could be down to user knowledge than the actual reporting side of things. I'm not a big user of it, but I was a bigger user of MaaS360, and we used to be able to run weekly and monthly reports. In the case of any deviations. we'd get a warning immediately. That's not so easy to do or to get in place for Intune. This could be just a user issue, but when I compare both, that's the only thing that's lacking for me."
"Lacking in features such as Wi-Fi and network security."
"Microsoft needs to enhance device-level security, as sometimes when using Microsoft Intune, the device's operating system becomes stuck and requires a full uninstall to remove the Intune bug."
"I'd like some more reporting so that I don't have to delve into PowerShell and I can pull more of the local device information such as memory, apps installed, etc. It would be nice to be able to see the apps that are present there but might not be managed. For example, if they installed 7Zip, it could report that back via an installed program or feature to see what was currently installed."
"There's quite a lot of development that they can do within their Intune dashboard. I think there are too many lines hyperlinked to move you around. Others, in contrast, give you a simple dashboard and an intuitive administrative walkthrough."
"Technical support is not that great."
"No option to do end-to-en macOS management. Slow implementation of policies."
"When a misconfiguration or drift occurs, fixing the issue can be difficult. For instance, if there is a change in API calls while a script is running, it can be challenging to make corrections. This may require additional review and modifications to the code. I recall an instance where an industry budget creation process was altered, and it took significant time to amend the code. In fact, I had to add five or six different script portions to resolve the issue."
"The state locking functionality can be improved. In certain situations, we have to force-unlock the state, which sometimes does not work. When that happens, we have to manually go to the state backend and remove that particular state, which is kind of a cumbersome process. It should also have more functions, more expressions, and support for more products."
"HashiCorp Terraform is an open-source tool that relies on external developers to create plugins to expand its capabilities. However, this approach can be problematic as not all plugins are created by professionals and some may have security vulnerabilities. In the case of GKE, Google has created a solid plugin, but for other services, one must search for plugins on the HashiCorp Terraform registry, which can be hit or miss, as many plugins are created by students or hobbyists, who may not continue to maintain or update them. This model of open-sourced plugins may not be the most reliable or secure way of expanding the tool's capabilities."
"Lacks flexibility in common programming languages."
"This solution could be improved by adding features such as CDM to accelerate the access of data by the users."
"I still struggle a bit when configuring VPNs when we have multiple rules. If we have five or six virtual private clouds and we have to give rights between those multiple VPCs, we can have big problems. I think it was a learning curve and then we improved it."
"They should include tutorials for understanding the use cases."
"I would like to see a short-term option for a short-term plan."
"The product’s support services and licensing models need improvement."
"In a feature release, they could enhance the reporting. However, we have not evaluated this part of the solution extensively."
