Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We have some legacy servers that can be associated with this structure. With Ceph, we can rearrange these machines and reuse our investment.""I like the distributed and self-healing nature of the product.""The most valuable feature is the stability of the product.""Most valuable features include replication and compression.""Ceph was chosen to maintain exact performance and capacity characteristics for customer cloud.""Red Hat Ceph Storage is a reliable solution, it works well.""The ability to provide block storage and object storage from the same storage cluster is very valuable for us.""Most of the features are beneficial and one does not stand out above the rest."

"It has allowed us to save a lot of time and money by letting us create a vSAN within a Windows VM on the environment it controls.""It has improved our organization in terms of its uptime as our main cluster has never been offline due to a SAN failure.""The ROI is great on this product.""Given the high availability of the server cluster, we were able to reduce separate physical servers onto one hyper-converged cluster - this saved in OPEX and CAPEX costs immediately, along with licensing costs of the Windows Server licenses.""Their support goes above and beyond with the integration of their software.""vSAN we found was simple to set up, easy to configure and manage and allows us to achieve storage redundancy.""It includes every feature that a traditional SAN offers and so much more.""We have been able to use more on-prem hardware to reduce cost and also use old disks that we do not trust enough for ordinary RAID or usage."

Cons
"What could be improved in Red Hat Ceph Storage is its user interface or GUI.""It took me a long time to get the storage drivers for the communication with Kubernetes up and running. The documentation could improve it is lacking information. I'm not sure if this is a Ceph problem or if Ceph should address this, but it was something I ran into. Additionally, there is a performance issue I am having that I am looking into, but overall I am satisfied with the performance.""It would be nice to have a notification feature whenever an important action is completed.""The storage capacity of the solution can be improved.""Ceph is not a mature product at this time. Guides are misleading and incomplete. You will meet all kind of bugs and errors trying to install the system for the first time. It requires very experienced personnel to support and keep the system in working condition, and install all necessary packets.""In the deployment step, we need to create some config files to add Ceph functions in OpenStack modules (Nova, Cinder, Glance). It would be useful to have a tool that validates the format of the data in those files, before generating a deploy with failures.""Please create a failback solution for OpenStack replication and maybe QoS to allow guaranteed IOPS.""The product lacks RDMA support for inter-OSD communication."

More Red Hat Ceph Storage Cons →

"A central management console may be nice to see all nodes.""The main thing I would like to see improved is the level of documentation.""For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.""With data verification, I would like to know how does the solution perform validation of data being synced between two VSANs.""The logs can also become very noisy when there is an issue, which is very infrequent.""It would be great if it provided thin provisioned virtual disks.""One main thing this product needs to work on is reporting.""The interface of the management console of the StarWind Virtual SAN is complex, and it's difficult for the novice user to interact with the management having less knowledge or training in the product."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The other big advantage is that Ceph is free software. Compared to traditional SAN based storage, it is very economical."
  • "There is no cost for software."
  • "Most of time, you can get Ceph with the OpenStack solution in a subscription as a bundle."
  • "We never used the paid support."
  • "If you can afford a product like Red Hat Ceph Storage then go for it. If you cannot, then you need to test Ceph and get your hands dirty."
  • "The price of this product isn't high."
  • "The price of Red Hat Ceph Storage is reasonable."
  • "The operational overhead is higher compared to Azure because we own the hardware."
  • More Red Hat Ceph Storage Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
