We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The scheduling within the data engineering pipeline is very much appreciated, and it has a wide range of connectors for connecting to any data sources like SQL Server, AWS, Azure, etc. We have used it with Kafka, Hadoop, and Azure Data Factory Datasets. Connecting to these systems with StreamSets is very easy.""It is a very powerful, modern data analytics solution, in which you can integrate a large volume of data from different sources. It integrates all of the data and you can design, create, and monitor pipelines according to your requirements. It is an all-in-one day data ops solution.""The ability to have a good bifurcation rate and fewer mistakes is valuable.""StreamSets data drift feature gives us an alert upfront so we know that the data can be ingested. Whatever the schema or data type changes, it lands automatically into the data lake without any intervention from us, but then that information is crucial to fix for downstream pipelines, which process the data into models, like Tableau and Power BI models. This is actually very useful for us. We are already seeing benefits. Our pipelines used to break when there were data drift changes, then we needed to spend about a week fixing it. Right now, we are saving one to two weeks. Though, it depends on the complexity of the pipeline, we are definitely seeing a lot of time being saved.""I really appreciate the numerous ready connectors available on both the source and target sides, the support for various media file formats, and the ease of configuring and managing pipelines centrally.""I have used Data Collector, Transformer, and Control Hub products from StreamSets. What I really like about these products is that they're very user-friendly. People who are not from a technological or core development background find it easy to get started and build data pipelines and connect to the databases. They would be comfortable like any technical person within a couple of weeks.""What I love the most is that StreamSets is very light. It's a containerized application. It's easy to use with Docker. If you are a large organization, it's very easy to use Kubernetes.""Important features include that it comprises lots of functionality to connect data from various sources through connector availability, scheduling pipelines at any time, and integration with third-party and security solutions for encryption."

"It's easy to understand, makes flows and is efficient.""The most valuable features are easy integration, quick tab to develop, quick tab to market, and interactive integration platform.""Their automation and workflows are very strong, and you can build the workflows very easily and quickly.""It is very easy to use. It takes complex workloads away, and it provides very smooth integration. It has got a lot of out-of-the-box connectors. It has got a lot of out-of-the-box APIs, which makes it really easy to integrate with applications for different use cases, whether it is in finance, HR, or customer operations. It is by far our favorite integration product.""Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.""It is easier to use than other technical open-source technologies.""Workato is low code, intuitive, and easy to use."

Cons
"The data collector in StreamSets has to be designed properly. For example, a simple database configuration with MySQL DB requires the MySQL Connector to be installed.""We often faced problems, especially with SAP ERP. We struggled because many columns weren't integers or primary keys, which StreamSets couldn't handle. We had to restructure our data tables, which was painful. Also, pipeline failures were common, and data drifting wasn't addressed, which made things worse. Licensing was another issue we encountered.""The software is very good overall. Areas for improvement are the error logging and the version history. I would like to see better, more detailed error logging information.""If you use JDBC Lookup, for example, it generally takes a long time to process data.""We've seen a couple of cases where it appears to have a memory leak or a similar problem.""Using ETL pipelines is a bit complicated and requires some technical aid.""In terms of the product, I don't think there is any room for improvement because it is very good. One small area of improvement that is very much needed is on the knowledge base side. Sometimes, it is not very clear how to set up a certain process or a certain node for a person who's using the platform for the first time.""StreamSets should provide a mechanism to be able to perform data quality assessment when the data is being moved from one source to the target."

More StreamSets Cons →

"The management dashboard in the solution is an area with shortcomings that needs improvement.""I would like to see the dashboarding and reporting processes improved.""From the deployment point of view, our customers encounter platform downtime where it does not serve the actual request on the systems.""Workato's Extract, transform, and load (ETL) and extract, load, and transform (ELT) are not very strong and could be improved for very complex transformations.""A limitation is that their cloud presence is only in North America and Europe.""The only minor drawback would be if there was a UI at the front of it, for apps and for a portal as well, it would make it really easy. It would be really useful if there were more apps capabilities.""It is tedious to make a tailor-fit function."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We are running the community version right now, which can be used free of charge."
  • "StreamSets Data Collector is open source. One can utilize the StreamSets Data Collector, but the Control Hub is the main repository where all the jobs are present. Everything happens in Control Hub."
  • "It has a CPU core-based licensing, which works for us and is quite good."
  • "There are different versions of the product. One is the corporate license version, and the other one is the open-source or free version. I have been using the corporate license version, but they have recently launched a new open-source version so that anybody can create an account and use it. The licensing cost varies from customer to customer. I don't have a lot of input on that. It is taken care of by PMO, and they seem fine with its pricing model. It is being used enterprise-wide. They seem to have got a good deal for StreamSets."
  • "The pricing is good, but not the best. They have some customized plans you can opt for."
  • "We use the free version. It's great for a public, free release. Our stance is that the paid support model is too expensive to get into. They should honestly reevaluate that."
  • "The overall cost for small and mid-size organizations needs to be better."
  • "There are two editions, Professional and Enterprise, and there is a free trial. We're using the Professional edition and it is competitively priced."

  • "On a scale of one to ten, the pricing is around a six. We have a consumption model and the pricing is higher. If you are using any kind of ML-based approach, machine learning, or some advanced analytics, you may have to pay more."
  • "Speaking about price, I would say that it's market-related. Also, there are costs in addition to the standard license fees since different add-ons depend on what you require."
  • "Workato is an expensive solution."
