We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"There is an easy process for configuring it, and it is straightforward to implement the device from scratch.""Fortinet offers the latest versions to cater to the needs of enterprises.""It is easy to manage, and it doesn't need much knowledge from the team. It is a stable device, and there are many features that are included out of the box.""All of the features of Fortinet FortiGate are useful and the security protection is good.""Advanced routing (RIP, OSPF, BGP, PBR). It gives you a seamless and simple integration into a large network.""It is a good source for firewall protection.""The VPN is the most valuable feature.""This version is stable. I don't have any issues with this solution, in our environment, it works well."

More Fortinet FortiGate Pros →

"The most valuable feature must be AnyConnect. We have quite a few customers who use it. It is easy to use and the stablest thing that we have. We have experienced some issues on all our VPN clients, but AnyConnect has been the stablest one.""The firepower sensors have been great; they do a good job of dropping unwanted traffic.""We found the initial setup to be easy.""The product is easy to manage and simple. It works with the rest of our Cisco products. You can drop in new ones if you need more performance. The training and documentation provided are good.""We have been using a 5520 for seven years in our datacenter and we are satisfied by this version.""We have not had to deal with stability issues.""It makes it very easy to have delineated roles and responsibilities between network engineering and network security.""The most important feature is its categorization because on the site and social media you are unified in the way they are there."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Pros →

"I like the ease of deployment and its flexibility. We don't need to deal with license, quotes, procurement, delivery, and installation. Everything is software-based, and it's very easy to operate.""The visibility and log availability offered are highly valued for troubleshooting purposes, and this is a key factor driving customer interest in the firewall module.""The scalability is okay. We have around 2200 people using this solution.""The product’s firewall and VPN package are fantastic compared to any other solution.""Most of the features that Zscaler has to offer, we will deploy.""The initial setup is straightforward.""Zscaler provides effective protection against various cyber threats ensuring a safe environment""The solution is scalable."

Cons
"Fortinet needs more memory to save the log files. We need it to save the logs on the hardware and not in the cloud. I know this feature is available in FortiCloud, but if we need this log locally, it is not available.""One of the problems I was having was with user mapping, and it is an issue for which I have escalated tickets with Fortinet support.""I could not configure sFlow from the FortiGate graphical user interface. I realized that the sFlow configuration is available only from the CLI, and discovered that sFlow is not supported on virtual interfaces, such as VDOM links, IPsec, or GRE.""The support from Fortinet FortiGate could improve. They are not easily accessible when we need them. They could improve their response time.""The captive portal could be improved.""We would like to have the ability to disable some of the security functionalities.""To some degree, it's almost a question as to why some of this stuff isn't simpler. For example, for an AP deployment, while it's integrated, the number of steps that you have to go through in order to get the AP up, seems like a lot.""I feel that the reporting needs to be improved."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"For the new line of FTDs, the performance could be improved. We sometimes have issues with the 41 series, depending what we activate. If we activate too many intrusion policies, it affects the CPU.""The pricing is a bit high.""I would like to see them release a patch for ASAv with cross-platform FirePower integration.""One feature I would like to see, that Firepower doesn't have, is email security. Perhaps in the future, Cisco will integrate Cisco Umbrella with Firepower. I don't see why we should have to pay for two separate products when both could be integrated in one box.""There are some limitations with SSL. Regarding the security assessment for the ISO 27000 standard, there are certain features that Cisco needs to scale up. Not all products support it, so you need to be slightly careful, especially on the site track.""Even on a smaller scale, people are finding you need HA pairs, and there's no way that the ASA can do that, at least in the virtual version.""It doesn't have a proper GUI to do troubleshooting, so most people have to rely on the command line.""It's lacking one feature: VPN. Also, the 2100 Series lacks a DDoS feature. If they could add that to those platforms, that would be good."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"Instead of the standard license, they should certainly provide customers with the visibility to access and view the logs.""Data Leak Prevention is only for web filtering and there is no protection for email.""The issue right now is probably that Zscaler is not providing web browser isolation. Another solution, Menlo, offers this. For one customer, we had to send traffic to Menlo to do the isolation for us. It was requested by the customer so that they could integrate any iframe. Zscaler needs to add this type of feature in their next release.""Its technical support services could be better.""The product could improve its integration with some legacy systems.""They do not provide a few components that are fundamental to differentiate the products""Certain criteria need to be met if you want to scale this solution.""Zscaler Cloud Firewall should have a better understanding of all dynamic cloud applications."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
