We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"StarWind Virtual SAN is a very easy-to-use solution that can be quickly and easily deployed and configured without intimate and specific knowledge in the virtualization sphere.""StarWind has provided us with a top-notch, well-supported, robust vSAN offering when other vendors have moved to hyper-converged solutions that are outside of our average clients' reach from a financial and resource perspective.""It is extremely stable.""I've been really impressed with it so far. I think it's pretty great, actually. It does exactly what we need it to do, and it does it well, so I would recommend it. Plus, the support has been very good.""I like StarWind's high availability. The failover is almost immediate, so the end users have no idea the guest VM moved at all. We can failover all guest VMs onto a single hypervisor, place it into maintenance mode, install updates, and reboot a hypervisor all during the daytime and remotely, with confidence the process will be successful.""When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three.""The most valuable feature is the fact that the nodes are Active/Active, and allow us to do upgrades on any node without any downtime.""I like the asynchronous replication and failover features. They are what I'm primarily using it for. The asynchronous replication is helpful because our servers are backed up continuously throughout the day. If anything goes wrong we just fail over immediately. That is a very nice feature to have."

"I find all the features of this solution excellent. The ability to move data to the public cloud is valuable."

More Cohesity C4000 Series Pros →

"The solution was connected to alternate storage. It provides great scalability and reliability.""The support team responds quickly.""The most valuable feature is high availability.""The setup was very straightforward.""It is easy to use for management and operations teams because the tools are in one place.""The integration with AWS is a valuable feature.""The solution is quite stable.""The most valuable feature is the overall integration and just seeing the three different layers which make up the machine software. Altogether, it's something that I would say is much better than any other solution that I have experienced before."

Cons
"The software monitoring should be web-based to be reachable from any VLAN workstation.""With data verification, I would like to know how does the solution perform validation of data being synced between two VSANs.""Management tools could be improved, sometimes the usage seems to be slowed down and confusing. A native web interface could also be an option. I love to see in the future port of the software on a general Linux distribution like RedHat or Ubuntu in order to avoid windows license costs. I would also like to see features like erasure coding implemented. On the VSAN software, I would like to see some improvements in the storage pools (eliminate the usage of the file as a data container and use the raw partition).""Perhaps more reporting features on the utilization, usage, and performance of the configured high-availability images and underlying physical disks would be helpful.""If there was one feature I would like to see it would be a built-in subsystem for managing UPS backups shutdown procedures providing a way to initiate VM shutdown on all host servers, shut down the host servers, then put the fault-tolerant mirroring in standby, and finally shut down the StarWind SANs.""This product would benefit from having automated alerting functionality.""StarWind currently has a Windows native application that it uses for management. There is not a web-based GUI at this time.""One main thing this product needs to work on is reporting."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The pricing and the partnerships with AWS and Azure can be improved."

More Cohesity C4000 Series Cons →

"They need to work on improving the overhead for protecting the data.""There should be more functionality available for routing.""The storage capability must be improved.""The solution needs to offer more documentation and educational materials.""I am not really impressed by the technical support of this solution.""We've had some issues around the licensing.""They should provide continuous support for data migration.""The support of containers needs to be improved. At present, it is limited to VMware. There needs to be direct communication with the hardware rather than through a hypervisor."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "The price could be improved."
  • "The product is expensive."
