We performed a comparison between Fortinet FortiGate-VM and Palo Alto Networks K2-Series based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Firewalls solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."Fortinet has a very good solution for Secure SD-WAN. One very good feature is that they have robust and simple FortiOS through which they provide all solutions. That's their strength. There's not much complexity involved with the Secure SD-WAN solution of Fortinet as compared to Cisco's solution, which has a lot of flexibility but complexity also comes with that flexibility."
"The integration with Active Directory is one of the good features. Most of the customers are now looking for the Single Sign-on feature. So, being able to integrate Active Directory with the firewall is useful. It is also easy."
"The most valuable feature is the web filter."
"It enables our organization to become more productive. Also, it protects our NEtWare from viruses and malware."
"I like how we can achieve total integration."
"The dashboard I have found the most valuable in Fortinet FortiGate."
"The UTM feature is quite good. FortiAP is easy to deploy because both Fortigate and FortiAP are under the same brand. Otherwise, you need to do more work on the configuration."
"The SD-WAN function is very developed. It has SD-WAN functionality with security features in one device. We can manage from one single console SD-WAN and the security policy."
"Initial setup is very straightforward with a wizard, if needed."
"It is easy to set up the solution."
"The ROI is good since I get free support."
"I did like the ability to back up the configuration into the cloud, as opposed to having to store the configurations or just downloading them, the backups, to local devices."
"It is a complete package, and it has complete offerings. It fit the needs, and our customer is happy with it."
"Good for the servers and can stop network attacks, including spam."
"The solution offers good documentation."
"The most valuables features are the ease of use and deployment."
"Palo Alto firewalls are scalable enough. We have about 110 employees in our company, and we are about to expand to 130."
"The scalability of the product is quite high."
"As long as the solution is kept updated, it's pretty stable."
"Palo Alto has an approach that makes the configuration easier not only for the customers but also for the IT help for the customers."
"Palo Alto has better and finer controls than, say, Cisco or Check Point."
"I like the tool's WildFire feature."
"I have found the threat profile feature valuable."
"Everything I could possibly want has already been implanted in the new version."
"This product could be improved with Active directory integration and better handling in IPsec and GRE Tunnels."
"The reporting in Fortinet FortiGate could improve. Customers are having to purchase additional reporting components. When I have used the Sophos solution it is a complete solution, in Fortinet FortiGate you have to use additional tools to have the features needed."
"The search tool needs improvement. It's very difficult to search for policies right now."
"In the next release, maybe the documentation on how to use this solution could be improved."
"In the balance between links feature normally you can just choose one option to balance. It would be better for the solution to have more than one option, preferably three."
"FortiGate should have a better way of detecting and managing the system memory because otherwise if the memory is too low, a system restart is required."
"There are mainly two areas of improvement in Fortinet FortiGate— the licensing cost and the timing of upgrading licenses for boxes."
"The Wi-Fi controller needs a lot of improvement."
"The graphical user interface should be enhanced."
"They could provide more integration options with different platforms."
"There should be integration with an active directory — with Microsoft."
"There were challenges during setup, and many of them were self-inflicted."
"We encountered scalability issues in IPSec Module. The tunnels freeze sometimes."
"There is always room for improvement in any solutions, including Fortinet's FortiGate-VM. Although the solution claims to have a superior throughput compared to other OEMs, upon closer examination and comparison, there is potential for significant improvement in this area. In today's rapidly evolving technology world, it is important to continuously strive for enhancement and development, and I believe Fortinet can make significant strides in this direction for the FortiGate-VM."
"The solution can improve by adding separate interfaces for proxy and flow-based usage."
"Technical support could be better."
"The product should get frequent updates allowing us to add new signatures."
"Sometimes there are interactions with support or the provider that are not ideal."
"The scalability of Palo Alto Networks K2-Series is good. It is good for larger environments over smaller ones."
"The technical support, and how they provide it to the client, needs to be improved."
"It is recommended that the Palo Alto Networks K2-Series be implemented step by step for the Panorama. Sometimes we can't overwrite the configurations because it fails."
"I would like to see the threat intelligence capability integrated with other vendors such as Cisco and Forcepoint."
"It would be really helpful to have dashboards that provide information on IOC blockings such as where and how many. It will also be good to know how many hashing files have been reported. It would also be nice to have easy access to this information. Otherwise, it's a painful, manual task."
"Its networking features could be better."

In the best tradition of these questions, Feature-wise both are quite similar, but each has things it's better at, it kind of depends what you value most.
PA is good at app control, web filtering and such like, they have always been top of the pile there. The GUI is very good, and their product is very user-focused.
Fortinet is good for scalability and predictable high throughput (ASICs in the hardware), and useful things like authentication flexibility, CLI config (if you have any networking/Cisco people, they always seem to prefer CLI over GUI) and have better OT features, maybe relevant to your manufacturing use?
Fortinet seem to have a broader integration offering with their security fabric than PA do, plus they can do Fortinet-based wifi, switching, etc. Depends if you are prepared to go all-in with a single vendor.
