Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Highly available storage is the most valuable feature. The entire rollout is hyper-converged and requires no extra storage further than the hosts in which Hyper-V is running. Another feature that has been great is the support from StarWind in general. We have their proactive support package on the main cluster that employs Starwind Virtual SAN.""It is extremely stable.""Immediately we noticed huge performance gains, even on older hardware and once we implemented a 10GB link between both servers, the sync was near-instant after the initial sync was complete.""StarWind Virtual SAN (vSAN) offers a significant breadth of features.""The best part is the easy way it operates with a very clear GUI without any unnecessary items.""The support has been amazing and quick to reply.""StarWind is very easy to use, even if you have had no experience using a SAN before.""This product now allows us to migrate virtual machines between nodes as if we had a dedicated $100,000 SAN in the mix without the additional cost and management of the SAN."

"The product’s most valuable feature is the concept of hyper-convergence."

"Installation is straightforward because it's a vSAN. It only took one or two days.""Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Series' deployment is easy. We are a tier-one platinum partner who is into multiple implementations.""We find the setup quite straightforward and very easy.""The VX machines are scalable."

Cons
"Security on the ISCSI protocol could be improved by adding features like OS-type control access, especially for the data center environment.""A better overall view of the different deployments could be beneficial, although this is difficult due to how flexible the solution is.""I think the setup could be streamlined a bit.""It runs until it does not - and disaster recovery documentation is sparse and mostly unclear.""The software could benefit from more tooling to help with initial deployment.""Regular updates to the software are required, and subtle design changes would be welcome.""I found that certain browsers are not fully compatible with the administration web access portal.""Android app for monitoring and receiving push notifications as alarms or monitoring I/O from any mobile device could be a good feature and nice to have as we are not always on our desk."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Lenovo ThinkAgile MX Certified Node’s support services could be faster."

More Lenovo ThinkAgile MX Certified Node Cons →

"With the VX machines, the clients often confuse the hardware itself with the services and resources. VMs are configured according to resources - memory, hard disk capacity, and network. These resources, including memory and processor, are actually shared on the VX Series. So, if the server's processor is underpowered or unreliable for the VMs, many of the VMs will encounter issues. Ideally, the physical server configuration should align more closely with the needs of the virtual servers.""Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Series needs to improve its stability. Its resolution should be faster.""The user management could be a bit better. It's something they could improve upon in future releases.""Support could be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "You need to pay a license for additional features. If we need to monitor hardware for the automatic alert notification, we need to pay them."
  • "The tool's pricing is competitive."
  • "There is room for improvement in the licensing structure, maybe. Regarding sizing the resources, sometimes it's difficult to calculate/compute them based on the client's requirements."
