We performed a comparison between Meraki SD-WAN and VMware NSX based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Software Defined Networking (SDN) solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."The most valuable feature for me is the security functionality."
"This product has a simple configuration that can be accessed through a web interface or the API."
"The tool is easy to use."
"The most interesting feature is the amount of information you can get from overseeing the system from a centralized place."
"Meraki SD-WAN is a very stable and scalable solution with good technical support."
"The seamless end-to-end setup is really what makes it beautiful; that's why Meraki is good."
"The features of SD-WAN are very appealing because you have a centralized dashboard and multiple options to terminate. You have an internet leased line, which means that you can connect your broadband and 3G and 4G cellular networks on the same router. This makes it easy for us to manage everything on a single dashboard. That is, you can integrate multiple stacks in such a way that you do not have to maintain any other dashboard. You get single-pane-of-glass accessibility with Meraki."
"The dashboard is user-friendly. It's very simple to use."
"The microsegmentation allows me to sleep at night. My job is reducing risk, plugging security holes, and working with the automated layer security. Even if somebody spins up a new server, it has to have a tag in NSX."
"This is the most scalable product of its type."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to create, develop, and deploy servers in minutes to hours, rather than days."
"The solution is robust as it covers everything we want to do and is stable, so we're happy enough with it. We have had no problems so far. Everything is great."
"NSX has excellent security features like virtual firewalls. I also like the micro-segmentation features, which are useful for the virtual machines inside the servers."
"The microsegmentation is a good feature. You can segment details, products, or hardware information."
"The most valuable features of VMware NSX are the tight integration with the VMware Hypervisor natively and the management console. We have a lot of other integrations where you are able to see the virtual machine's end-to-end visibility."
"To be able to do the DR and SRM migrations from datacenter to datacenter, we're able to do them with SRM with VXLAN, with the NSX product."
"The VPN client could be improved."
"The solution needs to enact more advanced protections."
"The solution lacks controllers."
"The default classes should be expanded."
"There is still some work to do when it comes to AI."
"There is a point in a very large organization where you hit the VPN limit, or tunnel limit."
"From the vice perspective, they just are not as robust as some of the other vendors. They have limitations in throughput and the number of circuits that they can support on a wide area network. Their higher-end security is all cloud-based. They have some capability with the premise-based solutions, but the higher ends are all cloud-based, and that's via Cisco Umbrella."
"Meraki could make better use of virtual connect."
"I would like them to make integration with other vendors easier."
"One drawback is this solution requires a lot of other products in the VMware ecosystem to have a full end-to-end operation orchestration monitoring. You have to buy a lot of add-ons to fully utilize the functionality."
"Our technical team is always looking for the solutions that they work with to offer more convenient integrations."
"I want to see the solution expand to more than just the network, for example, perhaps it could provide some VLAN technologies."
"They could branch out to the physical layer."
"Its licensing model could be VM based."
"The integration with other brands is not the best."
"I would like to see automation capabilities in the deployment process."
Meraki SD-WAN is ranked 1st in Software Defined Networking (SDN) with 61 reviews while VMware NSX is ranked 2nd in Network Virtualization with 94 reviews. Meraki SD-WAN is rated 8.2, while VMware NSX is rated 8.0. The top reviewer of Meraki SD-WAN writes "Very stable security, great service, and the best for VPN management". On the other hand, the top reviewer of VMware NSX writes "Allows for seamless micro-segmentation and the support is exceptional". Meraki SD-WAN is most compared with Cisco SD-WAN, VMware SD-WAN, Omada Cloud SDN and Cradlepoint NetCloud, whereas VMware NSX is most compared with Nutanix Flow Network Security, Illumio, Akamai Guardicore Segmentation, Cisco ACI and Cisco Secure Workload. VMware NSX is VMware's data center networking platform that supports among other things VxLAN that provides micro-segmentation to ensure optimal performance and security (both north/south and east/west). VMware SD-WAN solution is through their acquisition of Velocloud, which is the market leader in the space. Meraki SD-WAN is owned by Cisco. Meraki SD-WAN is a simple, quick to implement, all-in-one solution that is cloud managed and great for smaller offices. Cisco's higher end, feature rich SD-WAN solution is through their Viptela offering. Cisco's leading data center offering is ACI. Many SMBs are going with a managed service that use Cisco or VMware's solution. Cisco and VMware do not integrate well, so it is best to choose one vendor or the other.
VMware NSX is all about Software Defined Networking ie virtualizing the 7 layers of switches/routers that we know in the physical HW world. VMware is very successful with this technology acquired from NICERA. SD-WAN stands for Software-Defined WAN which is about networking but NOT at the local level, it is a wide area network. For this VMware made another acquisition which is VeloCloud. Cisco Meraki SD-WAN and VeloCloud are both in the magic quadrant and therefore competing.
Well, both products are very good but if you are looking for only SD-WAN Feafure than Cisco Meraki is the perfect solution: it's easy to manage, easy to deploy and deep insight at the packet level.
VMware NSX is the complete package of comprehensive features like Application Load Balancing, routing, switching, micro-segmentation and many more but at a cost! It's very easy to manage from a single pane of glass.
in a nutshell, if you want Application-Aware Load balancing and wan optimization which should be easy to manage and deploy than Cisco Meraki is the right product and if you are looking for a fully integrated solution and have a deep pocket then you should choose VMware NSX.
Meraki SD-WAN is ranked 2nd in Software Defined Networking (SDN) with 11 reviews while VMware NSX is ranked 1st in Software Defined Networking (SDN) with 19 reviews. Meraki SD-WAN is rated 8.0, while VMware NSX is rated 8.0. The top reviewer of Meraki SD-WAN writes "Enables us to get valuable information from the system without having to go into every single device". On the other hand, the top reviewer of VMware NSX writes "Enables us to identify problems before they manifest, but they should develop more advanced features". Meraki SD-WAN is most compared with VeloCloud, Cisco SD-WAN and Cradlepoint NetCloud, whereas VMware NSX is most compared with Cisco ACI, Cisco Tetration and Nutanix Flow.
