Good stability and price-to-performance ratio is quite impressive
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features."
  • "I would like to see more integration features with different platforms."

What is our primary use case?

The OceanStor is a versatile solution that can be used for general purposes, such as an all-flash for high-speed systems or as backup storage. It is ideal for various IT environments.

What is most valuable?

The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features. Additionally, the price-to-performance ratio is quite impressive.  It's really easy to manage, and the price is quite low for the performance you are getting. Customers appreciate these features the most.

What needs improvement?

I would like to improve certain things in Huawei OceanStor. Unfortunately, due to the US ban on Chinese technologies, Huawei is unable to develop plugins or cooperate with vendors like Veeam and VMware. This is causing customers to miss out on certain features, but it's currently impossible to improve.

In the next release, I would like to see more integration features with different platforms. Due to restrictions imposed by the US government, Huawei is currently unable to develop plugins for OceanStor support.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Huawei OceanStor for eleven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is impressive. We have sold hundreds of storage devices, and we didn't face any outages or problems with the upgrades. The stability of their own developed SMP disks is incredible. The failure rate is really low. I would rate stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution and can accommodate additional storage devices, disks, and shelves with ease. It doesn't take more than ten minutes to scale it. I would rate the scalability ten out of ten.

We have more than 100 open sources and more than 50 customers using them.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted the customer service team many times. When I compare it to other vendors like IBM, Lenovo, and others, I would say that Huawei's support is one of the best. They respond quickly, analyze the problem efficiently, and provide spare parts easily. This is something we really appreciate.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and easy, especially when working with the storage arrays and familiar with the management. You can be quick with it. Generally, it takes about 30 minutes to deploy the storage rack physically.

It is on-premises, but it has connectivity for storage to the cloud. However, we don't use the cloud since we are in the EU, so we use the on-premises solution.

What about the implementation team?

Usually, for physical installations, you need two people. Some of the parts can be really heavy to put in the rack, but for deployment, including the software, only one person is usually required. However, we generally have two or three people available in case one of them is sick or leaves the company, so we can still manage it.

The solution can be deployed by either an admin or an engineer because the structure is easy to manage. Even a management person can do it, but they may be lost if something more difficult comes up. So I would say the engineer or admin person would be okay for deploying the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Usually, the license is included in the basic bundles. Some parts of the license are additional, but mostly everything customers need is included in the basic bundle. Some customers use advanced licenses for duplication and compression, and there are three or four different licenses available that distinguish the duplication ratios. But, in general, most customers use the basic license bundle. Also, all licenses on the Huawei storage rates are not limited to capacity, so if you buy them at the beginning, you don't have to extend or buy additional licenses when you scale out.

There are extra costs when you buy certification licenses for higher deduplication ratios or Hyper Metal features to make reflective storage clustering. But the price of the license is quite low, so it's not something special or expensive. Most customers spend several hundred or maybe a few thousand euros on these additional licenses. In the overall price of the storage rate, it's perfectly negligible.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise customers to look at the old flash, and new flash systems because they are great in price, performance, and features. They should go with the low end if they want something for backups.

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Good usability and support but needs better documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "The support is excellent."
  • "The security could be a bit more robust."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution in our infrastructure. We use it for storage as well as virtualization.

What is most valuable?

The support is excellent.

The solution is stable.

It can scale.

The useability is good. It's similar to other storage options on the market.

What needs improvement?

We would like the solution to provide better documentation. It needs to be more transparent so that we can figure out how to troubleshoot.

The security could be a bit more robust.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution since 2014. It's been about eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. It's reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While the solution can scale, you do need to pay extra. The more storage you need the more it costs.

We have ten people using the product. It's largely the IT team.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's support is very helpful and responsive.

Every time we need to raise the support, they provide support. They are responsive. However, as a customer, we cannot fix anything from our side. The documentation is not available. Everything is in a black box or something.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use IBM and HP for storage. It's not all Huawei. The usability across all of the solutions is similar. The only difference is the documentation for OceanStor isn't readily available. That said, their support is very responsive. The others require you to go through third parties that will analyze the issues first.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was done by Huawei. I don't have much information on the process of implementation.

What about the implementation team?

We used Huawei, a third-party, to help with the setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not sure of the exact pricing. Our IT team handles the licensing.

What other advice do I have?

We are a customer and end-user.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to store corporate data.

The solution's data replication features work slowly for nodes. They should improve this particular area.

The solution is very stable.

We have 300 solution users in our organization. It is very scalable.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup process is easy.

Easy to implement, runs well, and the price is good
Pros and Cons
  • "The setup and the price are the most valuable and not the features related."
  • "I would like to see the next generation all-flash, which could be combined."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for the software. The hardware, we design ourselves.

We are resellers. We provide business software and the back-end system is a cross-selling theme for us.

What is most valuable?

The setup and the price are the most valuable and not the features related.

On top of the data core environment for software-defined storage, we use machine power and not software technology.

We struggle with finding anything to improve, as it's a powerful solution and is missing nothing.

What needs improvement?

The energy could be better. I would like to see the next generation all-flash, which could be combined.

The interface needs improvement. You have a standardized fiber channel from the past and you have to order a 10 gig interface separately. It would be better to have it all. Huawei has it all in its portfolio, so it can easily be built. They don't have to purchase it, it can be built by themselves.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Huawei OceanStor for five years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted technical support because it runs very well. We have not had any issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are also working with Lenovo. Lenovo is in the same price range, but Huawei is a step further.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation is easy because we are educated and experienced in Huawei OceanStor.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Huawei OceanStor is priced very well but is a bit complicated.

You have a price list but have to wait for a discount, which depends on the distribution, where you get it from. This is intransparent, I prefer a clear price policy.

I would prefer having a price quote based on whether you are a reseller if you have silver or gold status, or a customer.

The price list is high and you get a large discount from the price list. I prefer a comparable price list and a smaller discount.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are always looking for the best solution for the next five years.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Huawei OceanStor an eight out of ten.

An affordable solution for medium enterprises that needs to improve scalability under heavy loads
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution works well for non-critical applications that do not require a heavy workload. The tool's all features are valuable."
  • "Huawei OceanStor should work on its saturation level and should be able to take up more load. It should give the same performance that it gives at 20 or 30 percent load for 80 percent as well."

What is most valuable?

The solution works well for non-critical applications that do not require a heavy workload. The tool's all features are valuable.

What needs improvement?

Huawei OceanStor should work on its saturation level and should be able to take up more load. It should give the same performance that it gives at 20 or 30 percent load for 80 percent as well.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate Huawei OceanStor's stability a six to seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the product's scalability a six out of ten. Scalability issues crop up at a particular saturation point. We have less than 10 clients for the product.

How was the initial setup?

I would rate Huawei OceanStor's set up a six to seven out of ten.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The tool's pricing is competitive and affordable. It has the best possible pricing that we can get from Huawei. The prices are fixed and there are no additional costs.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate the product a seven out of ten. Our clients are mostly medium enterprises.

What is our primary use case?

Huawei OceanStor is used as a data organization and storage system.

What is most valuable?

Huawei OceanStor provides numerous features that are tailored to cater to the requirements of all types of companies.

What needs improvement?

I would prefer if the diagnostics of our Huawei solutions in the data center are automatically shared with the manufacturer. This will enable them to proactively address concerns before they become serious, and reach out to us without the need for us to initiate a call.

The speed has room for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Huawei OceanStor for three years.
