We performed a comparison between Check Point NGFW and Untangle NG Firewall based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Firewalls solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."It has very easy management and an amazing ETM configuration."
"Initial setup is easy to configure."
"Virtual Domains (VDOMs) are a feature that we found valuable."
"Valuable features include the Web Application Firewall, and it even has DLP (data leak prevention)."
"I like several features that this product has, such as antivirus and internet navigation inspection. It is also simple to use."
"We can detect any attack of viruses or malware at the first point of contact."
"The most valuable feature is the ease of use."
"The GUI is good."
"The way in which it manages the nodes within a cluster architecture is excellent, offering fault tolerance which is, in my experience, practically imperceptible when one of the nodes fails."
"I think the VSX has been the most valuable feature for us."
"Check Point's most useful feature is threat prevention and extraction. It was tough to manage seven firewalls and a perimeter solution for IPS, anti-malware, anti-bot, and sandboxing."
"The technical services always replied in a very fast and effective way."
"The threat emulation blade and user identity awareness feature has helped us a lot in terms of perimeter security and have given us granular visibility of user access."
"I like the GUI."
"The overall security of the environment has been greatly improved by the Check Point NGFWs. Before implementing this solution we have to rely on the Cisco ACLs and Zone-Based firewall that we had configured on switches and routers, which in fact a simple stateful firewall, and currently not an efficient for protecting from advanced threats."
"I love the redesigned interface starting with R80 as well as the ability for multiple engineers to work on the policy simultaneously."
"All features are useful. We are using premium features such as bandwidth sharing, failover, web filters, SSL controls, antivirus, and VPN. We use these features to the fullest. These features are available in the paid firewall license, not the free one."
"The Untangle firewall is a software firewall, so it runs on generic hardware. We found that was probably the best feature, and it's why we chose it when we started using it three years ago."
"The most valuable features are IPS, MAPI, NAT, and VPN."
"NG Firewalls allow us to permit or deny applications we don't want to run. We also use content filtering, SSL inspection, and all the other things we run on the firewall to keep our clients protected and ensure they're not going where they shouldn't. It's a great firewall that works as intended."
"Web filtering is very reliable."
"The product helps small and medium enterprises secure their networks from intrusions. It also has features like DNS blocking."
"What I like about this product, which is the reason that we continue to use it, is that you can install the software version on your own hardware. In case there is a problem with the hardware, we can just install the firewall in another machine and restore the configuration."
"Application Control and filtering features are valuable."
"They need faster serviceability and more security features."
"They can do more tests before they release new versions because I would like to be more assured. We had some experiences where they release something new and great, but some of the old features are disabled or they don't work well, which impacts the product satisfaction. The manufacturer should be able to prove that everything works or not only that it might work. This is applicable to most of the other services, software, and hardware companies. They all should work on this. We cannot trust every new release, such as a beta release, on the first day. We wait for some comments on the forums and from other companies that we know. We always wait a few weeks before we use the updated version. They should also extend the VPN client application, especially for Linux versions. Currently, it has an application for Linux devices, but it doesn't work the way we want to connect to the VPN. They use only the old connection, not the new one. They have VPN client applications for Windows and Mac, but they can add more useful features to better manage the devices and monitor the current health of each device. Such features would be helpful for our company."
"The firmware needs improvement because there are bugs when a new release comes through. Sometimes, the configuration changes, and it's a bit harder to see where the fail is. The first time that you have the firmware, it tends to have some issues, and it's better to wait a bit to update the equipment."
"I would like to see improvements in the product's application rules."
"The integration with third-party tools may be something that they should work on."
"There were quite a few problems with the stability of the system."
"The logging details need to be improved."
"Fortinet needs more memory to save the log files. We need it to save the logs on the hardware and not in the cloud. I know this feature is available in FortiCloud, but if we need this log locally, it is not available."
"I would like there to be a way to run packet captures more easily in the GUI environment. Right now, if we want to read packet captures, we have to do so from the command line."
"It will be good if the product is rack-mounted."
"The whole solution has room for improvement."
"The predefined reports are limited and should provide more information. Check Point should provide a greater number of defined reports and produce reports for each division of the organization."
"It depends whether the problem is known to Check Point. If they are aware there is a problem, quite often it will then depend on which tech you finally land on if it's easier or harder to get to the root cause. The last issue was in India so that was pretty bad. It's easier if you get directly through to Tel Aviv or Ottawa, but you can't choose. Once they know what the issue is, it's pretty good. It pretty much depends on the engineer that you get. There are pretty good engineers and there are many engineers who are at just the starter level at Check Point who are not really into the stuff. Sometimes it's hard, sometimes it's easy, depending on the problem and the tech engineer you get."
"Potential improvements could be made around simplifying VPN functionality and configuration."
"The web UI for VSX could be better."
"The only downside to Check Point, is, due to the vast expanse of configurable options, it does become easily overwhelming."
"We have a minor issue when assigning IP addresses in the ARP tables. You should be able to go into the ARP tables, look at the IP address and say, "Nope, they need to be on this side on this IP address." The ability to set a DHP reservation from the ARP tables would be great. It's no big deal, but it would be nice to have."
"Web-filtering policies could be improved."
"The web content filtering needs improvement."
"It would be much easier if there was a mobile app."
"The pricing is not as good as it was some time ago. They've since skipped offering a lot of individual features."
"The management console for partners is a bit tricky (buggy)."
"The product needs to improve its mobile application."
"Whenever there are a large number of endpoint VPN clients, connectivity becomes slow."
