Executive Summary
Updated on Jun 6, 2023

We performed a comparison between CYPHER Learning and Google Classroom based on our users’ reviews in the Learning Management Systems (LMS) category. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: CYPHER Learning's setup was simple and clear, with training provided for some users. Google Classroom is generally easy to set up, but some users found it confusing for students. CYPHER Learning had a more involved deployment process with pilot groups and training sessions, while Google Classroom only requires a Google account and is cloud-based.

  • Features: CYPHER Learning provides personalized and gamified lessons, automation, group learning, and customization, as well as visibility into student progress and ease of use. On the other hand, Google Classroom offers unique copies and reusability of materials, flexibility, security, cloud-based accessibility, meetings, mark book, assignments, lecturer work grading and feedback, sharing lectures, and most importantly integration with Google Suite and Jamboard.

  • Room For Improvement: CYPHER Learning needs to improve its translation accuracy, grading system, formatting options, and reporting functionality. On the other hand, Google Classroom is lacking in multiple grades, organizational structure, online teaching platform, attractive templates, offline functionality, and learning resources.

  • Pricing: CYPHER Learning charges based on active users, while Google Classroom is free for educational institutions but pricey for private companies. Both have varying pricing and licensing options.

  • ROI: CYPHER Learning is a valuable tool that provides cost savings, efficiency improvements, and increased revenue, making it a productive and profitable choice. Google Classroom users did not provide sufficient feedback on ROI.

  • Service and Support: CYPHER Learning is known for having excellent customer service that is knowledgeable, responsive, and available around the clock. On the other hand, Google Classroom's support is not as accessible, although the training modules and resources they offer are still helpful. While Google doesn't directly provide technical support, CYPHER Learning's technical support is considered exceptional.

Comparison Results: CYPHER Learning offers personalized lessons, group learning, visibility into student progress, and better reporting functionality, making it a top-notch solution for educators and organizations looking to enhance their learning and training programs. While Google Classroom is free, easy to access and integrates with other Google apps, it lacks several features offered by CYPHER Learning.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I really like the fact that it's cloud-based. That means you don't have to look for updates. They happen automatically, which is great. It's also an easy, plug-and-play type of application. It is quite user-friendly and modern.""There are so many valuable features: The structure of the platform is fantastic and the learner experience is very good.""I also like the discussion board a lot because students can give their opinions there and interact with each other. For me, as an English teacher, it is also important because they practice writing in a real context.""There are several valuable features. One is the competency mapping. This helps us, as faculty members and developers of learning materials, track and monitor which competencies our students have acquired, based on the outcomes that we wanted them to have at the end of a particular module or term.""Initially, I was very excited about the automations. But when we started using the actual courses, I found that the ability to sync content and settings from parent courses to child courses is what I value the most. But both the automations and syncing are at the top of the list.""It is a platform that has everything. It is very powerful and intuitive. And because it is so user-friendly, it allows anyone without any knowledge of LMS platforms to make a course, publish it, and monitor it.""We love the group feature allowing students to have peer-to-peer learning experiences. In our case, it is for students, but this feature could also be useful for a business to provide peer-to-peer learning experiences for employees. The group tool provides an opportunity for students to connect with their peers inside of their own digital space. One of the aspects that we love about the group tool is that it allows students to leave the course but engage in a digital space where they access materials that are personalized to their group.""E-commerce is still one of the exotic features, meaning that not all LMS providers offer it. It is critical for us. We have had no trouble implementing payment gateways with this system and it works out-of-the-box without any special tricks."

"What I like about Google Classroom are the video lessons. I enjoy using it because it makes my life easier, for example, I can easily change my class and my lecture notes.""The most valuable feature of Google Classroom is its clouds based. It can be accessed anywhere. Additionally, the GUI is good, we have not had any complaints and the platform has built-in security. For example, email has protection.""When a teacher uploads material, all students connected to that class will receive the same information at the same time. I have found this to be a valuable feature. I also like that the material remains in Google Classroom until the teacher removes it. The UI is user-friendly, and you don't have to have prior experience to use the solution.""This solution integrates with all the other Google apps including Google Calendar and Google Docs. This makes it very easy to manage.""The most valuable feature of Google Classroom is the ability to share my lectures with many students, assign tasks to be completed, and overall student engagement.""Company-wise, the most important feature is that it is a product of Google. It is a part of Google Suite. With Google Classroom, you can easily embed a Google Sheet, Google Doc, or Google Form. You can easily create a quiz in Google Form. It is integrated with Google Drive. So, everything is on Google Drive, and you can easily use it. With single sign-on, you can use it with Google Apps as well.""Google Classroom is simple to use.""The product's UI is good and user-friendly."

Cons
"There is room for improvement in the way competencies for each area are designated. I would like the exact activities to be specified somewhere to clarify for the students what they need to complete each activity.""If the system had some graphing abilities and not just exporting of data to Excel sheets, that would be nice. I would like to be able to run a report on something and get graphs with insightful data. In an Excel sheet, I just have to reanalyze the data.""We manage a huge number of registered users and also offer a large number of courses on our platform, and our courses are offered via a large number of organizations. It's a very complex setup, but CYPHER Learning did an excellent job of fixing the initial speed issues we had.""There could be improvements in the dynamic and accessibility tools for the youngest students. For example, I create or attach links from other pages, and I use activities and games, such as roulettes, that encourage student participation.""There is further work to be done on the translation accuracy of international languages. It is really a challenge to have a system for perfect translation, especially as there are unique dialects embedded in different languages. In the future, the platform can have an integrated application that can "precisely" translate languages.""The list of students needs to be organized according to gender. The list of students in the product contains both male and female students, whereas, in our grading system, we list the male students followed by the female students.""I'd like a way to set deadlines for assignments to be submitted by learners' onboarding programs based on their enrollment dates. For example, if a learner starts in October, and we want the assignment submitted 30 days after that.""If there is one area that I would like to see more improvement in, it would be around detailed reporting. There are some little things that they could add that would give us more insights and we'd like to access those things through the reporting."

More CYPHER Learning Cons →

"There are a lot of things that need to be fixed in order for it to be called a learning management system. I think that's where a lot of people are very confused in terms of what Google Classroom actually does. Google Classroom is not a learning management system. A learning management system allows teachers to grade with authenticity and doesn't provide only one grade for a particular document or assignment.""The product's UI needs improvement.""The user interface of Google Classroom could improve by being more user-friendly.""The stability of the product is an area with certain flaws where improvements are required.""Google Classroom could improve by being easier to use. For example, making it functional with only a few buttons. It's difficult to know how to connect with students and make a link and share it with them. I found it difficult, and this is why I didn't continue using it. Additionally, it should be available to be downloaded to the desktop for use, similar to Zoom.""The stability could be improved.""I would like to see a better user experience, a more engaging interface, and more templates. Google should develop templates or at least encourage developers to share them. You'll only get a basic framework when you create a new course. You don't have different themes to choose from like you do in Moodle.""The product should provide features that allow teachers to be on video while taking the class."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Because our cost went down by 50%, I would say that the pricing is competitive."
  • "We have compared pricing with different vendors and found that CYPHER Learning was the most reasonable."
  • "We are on a plan where we pay for 1,000 users every month. The pricing structure is pretty straightforward. It just depends on what you need. We are currently going with a monthly model because sometimes there are still months during the year where we will have a lot less students on the system, and we took that into consideration."
  • "I'm an instructional designer, and from a build or a designer standpoint, it would be nice to have a more user-friendly resource folder to access artifacts to pull into course modules. The second feature that I would love is that while editing any page inside CYPHER Learning, there should be more functionality to design it well."
  • "Their plans are based on enrollment numbers. We're at the silver level with 100 active learners. So, you're really beholden to how many learners you're going to accommodate. There are no extra costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
  • "Understanding your active users, compared to total users, in terms of the plan you choose, is something to be aware of."
  • "CYPHER Learning is a bit more expensive than our previous solution."
  • "NEO's price is good."

  • "We are an educational institution, and it is free of charge for us. Normally, if you are a private company, you have to pay a lot of money to get this service, but they are giving it for free to schools."
  • "If you do a certain size and build, it's like any Google solution. You have to pay for storage, but you don't need to pay extra to use the interface. There may be Google Classroom partners that provide more integrated solutions, but I don't know. I'm strictly DIY."
  • "We did not need a license to use Google Classroom."
  • "I'm using a free version of Google Classroom, so it's a product I don't pay for."
  • "There are competitors that offer free solutions, making the price of Google Classroom high."
  • "Google Classroom is a free solution."
  • "Google Classroom is a free solution. There is paid version that has more options, the cost is approximately eight dollars per student per month."
  • "The solution is affordable."
