We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It's a very stable product, and we've never had any downtime with it.""You can protect your data and keep it for long durations, without it spending too much time on the local disk.""Reliability: It has never had a problem with backups or restores. If you store something, it is there.""Once setup, you do not need to touch it again. You just need to do a formal check on possibly batch updates.""The deduplication and compression features are the most valuable features.""It scales well for the amount of clients that we use with it.""We can use it with any storage for the back-end to save data.""It's very robust and has been on the market for a long time."

"There is a single vendor with the hardware, software, and maintenance. Thus, there is a single vendor with whom we can contact.""One beneficial feature is that the solution can handle complex environments.""It's a good product based on the features. You can upgrade the solution with only one click.""For me, the most valuable feature is in relation to the software updates.""The scalability of VxRail is very good.""The simplicity and manageability of VxRail are most valuable. We have a very good experience with this product. Its stability and scalability are also very good.""The initial setup was not complex.""Homogeneity is most valuable. The truth is that having everything in a single cluster helps a lot."

Cons
"We would like to see capabilities of long-term archiving and more support for hardware platforms.""Their support is lacking. I've talked to their developers and stuff in the last couple of weeks and they reassure me that some people have retired, and they're working on getting that bumped back up. But the support lacks a lot to be desired at this point.""The solution's ability to integrate with a cloud solution is one area that needs improvement.""Most customers still struggle with the reporting piece, especially generating reports. I think it needs some improvements in this area.""Easier configuration of some of the products, e.g., VE comes to mind.""If you take Spectrum Protect into account, and you have it along with restrictions to Spectrum Archive by means of LTFS, this is also something which should be made better within the overall product's program.""In a future release, it would be a benefit to have the ability to add an application as a storage target, as a storage pool. Additionally, they should add more functionality to the administration for the Operation Center.""It lacks reporting and an efficient alert mechanism. The GUI could also be improved."

More IBM Spectrum Protect Cons →

"I would like to see integration with vCenter if possible.""It needs faster deployment of security patches.""Pricing could be improved.""Some of the features of the hyperconverged infrastructure could be integrated with external storage. Right now, for example, if I have surveillance going, I need to purchase very cheap storage. So, an integration between the hyperconverged infrastructure and external storage would be good.""I can't speak to any missing features or weak aspects of the system just yet. We haven't had a chance to really dig in.""If they continue developing their product regarding VMware, it will be one of the best products in the HCI space. In terms of additional features, there is nothing missing because, for data protection, they also have the CDP option for VM. They can protect the VM at any point in time.""We have issues at times with the one-click upgrade, which is bugging us. At times, the one-click upgrade does not work or does not work well.""VxRail should try to improve the pricing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
  • "Licensing can be either complicated or simple depending on what type of licensing you wish to use and what works best for your environment."
  • "At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
  • "Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
  • "We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
  • "We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
  • "Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
  • "It is very scalable, but the downside is that it costs money."

  • "There is a permanent vSAN license included since it is required, but vCenter\ESXi host licensing should be validated in the purchase process."
  • "Most of hyper-converged solutions require additional licenses for the virtualization layer (like VMware)."
  • "Be mindful of your storage needs now and for the future."
  • "Compare the VxRail product to Nutanix. Nutanix has more features, but its pricing is higher."
  • "Compare it to what you spent on your last solution."
  • "We most likely pay yearly for support. The cost was justified by now because it stays up and I don't have to constantly open tickets. I probably rebooted the system once or twice. We haven't replaced any discs in the storage, we haven't had to do any disc replacements, so it just runs. You pay a little more but you cut down on the maintenance."
  • "The price is a little bit on the higher side but the system and management are so quick and easy that it's worth it for the customer."
  • "We were expecting Dell EMC to bring us something that would work very quickly and easily, but also be at a reasonable price point, and they did."

    Reviews from Real Users

VxRail is an all-in-one solution: "You don't have to worry too much about the hardware and you don't have to work on integrating a storage device. We instead have this as an all-in-one solution and everything is available as a box."

VxRail is remarkable: “The cover points feature in VxRail is remarkable. It's unique. It has an intervention failover system as well as an automatic failover system, reaching clusters existing in VxRail…

VxRail is a powerful performer: “...VxRail delivers a very high number of IOPS for a hybrid configuration or an all-flash configuration. The processors that are available in the Xeon family are very powerful. They are multi-core with typically 2 gigahertz, 2.4 gigahertz, or higher frequency, so the performance is very much appreciated.”
