Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We use MicroStrategy as an integrated solution with some of their other CRM type applications.""I have never had any problems with the stability.""Now we can collaborate, in real time. In the past we had to wait for our business partners say if a visualization looked good or sufficed for their requirements. There was no real-time decision making. Now, with Dossier, it will accelerate the velocity of decision making.""The usability for users to be able to drag and drop, then create their own reports.""I haven't come across any bugs.""The solution's platform analytics gives us real-time analysis of how a particular user uses the report and how the systems behave.""The stability of the product is good.""The interactive features that appear in the report were good. The external rendering option they give with multi servers was also good."

"No issues with stability. It is a very stable solution.""ElastiCube Manager is a very easy to use ETL tool, which includes the ability to easily transform raw data into reusable data.""The most valuable thing I have found is the ability for Sisense to connect data from totally different sources.""The best part about this solution is how easy it is to mash up the data from many sources. Sisense is fast compared to other solutions.""Sisense has helped us gain knowledge about our customers, as well as highlighting data quality issues to correct.""Support is very responsive and clearly one of the strengths of Sisense. I have always received a fast response and the staff is very helpful.""Allows users to build their own solutions without as much reliance on technology staff.""Ability to work with very large data sources without the limitations of Excel."

Cons
"With Cube partition (v10.1 and above) scalability has not been an issue, but the Cube publish time, and temporary space consumption while the Cube is being published, has almost doubled during implementation of Cube partition.""We would like access to more storage and access to more metadata to build the right programs that can construct all the stuff for us instead of us having to type it in all the time.""We would really like to see MicroStrategy have some support teams based more in Europe, because for now it seems that there is one person for the whole CE region. That is not exactly what we would like to see. We do know that MicroStrategy supports most places, either in the US or India, but those are different time zones, people, and cultures.""They need to improve on distribution services. There are lack of features which were there earlier with Narrowcast, but they are not there in the distribution services.""MicroStrategy is dragging behind other tools on the self-service visualizations, like Tableau. I would rate Tableau as a 10. For the same visualizations, I would say MicroStrategy is an eight, maybe nine. They're still behind on the self-service visualizations,""It would be good if it had greater analytics so we could build these visualizations by ourselves with scripts.""The In-Memory Capability (cubes) needs a lot of improvement.""There needs to be better visualization."

More MicroStrategy Cons →

"This solution does not have tabs. In order to have tabs, you have to download an add-on to mimic the tabs. They should be integrated to improve the solution.""I would also like to be able to run a bursts of reports based on different field values with PDF output right in the tool, rather than filtering on each field value and generating each PDF manually.""I would like Sisense to improve its performance, particularly when we are dealing with large-scale data.""I would love to have more customization capabilities for building dashboards, especially in creating custom widget sizes.""The initial version we purchased only ran on Windows servers, which was less than ideal for our DevOps team. I believe that has been remedied in the latest release.""Larger datasets will sometimes give a "Accumulated logs" error when trying to make minor changes. T""I would like to see more development and growth for the support of Knowledge Base and Community forums.""The administrative side of Sisense is a little cumbersome and confusing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "They made a change in the licensing module some time ago and we can now use all the enterprise tools for free."
  • "The pricing for MicroStrategy is always on the higher side. They should seriously start thinking about their pricing and licensing strategy."
  • "While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos."
  • "The price was good. We have had great support along the way."
  • "We actually researched some of the other solutions. For options, price, and customer acceptance, this product has worked well for us."
  • "They gave us a good deal."
  • "There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions."
  • "They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them."

  • "This solution is more expensive than Tableau, Qlik and Dundas. It is an expensive tool. They charge $75,000 while Tableau is $45,000."

After a recent presentation, several attendees asked me about the applications of Visual Insights and Tableau. Many companies are investing in both tools and are trying to figure out the right tool for specific applications Tableau has found its sweet-spot as an agile discovery tool that analysts use to create and share insights. It is also the tool of choice for rapid prototyping of dashboards. Tableau is very flexible with its data import. Tableau's data blending capability is very intuitive. This capability is useful when you have data spread across several different sources that has not gone through ETL processes. This is a problem analysts deal with routinely. They are unable to wait for the data warehouse team to develop ETL processes to provide the physical models they need to build an analysis. The Tableau interface is Excel-like and has a low barrier to entry for analysts that are used to working in Excel. Building a dashboard by mashing up visualizations in a Tableau worksheet is extremely simple. Users are able to build good presentation-quality dashboards in a very short amount time. Tableau's annotations capabilities and its time and geographical intelligence are key differentiators. Tableau has overcome limitations in data sharing with the introduction of a Data Server in Tableau 7.0. The Data server allows Data sources and extracts to be shared securely and opens up interesting new possibilities. If your application can take advantage of the above… Read more →
