Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Since this is an open source technology, if we are capable of writing the plugins in any scripting language, this product allows us to monitor anything we want.""Nagios XI helped me to draw the network and check for system failures.""The most valuable feature is its support for different types of devices, where it can use all of the equipment that you need.""You want to monitor a specific metric that nobody else has? You can do it even with the most basic of scripting skills, and you can always share it with the vast community of Nagios Exchange.""It's a monitoring agent. It's designed to do one thing. Its most valuable feature is its monitoring.""The dashboard allows you to see what's going on in the overall system.""The solution has a lot of plugins and scripts integrated with it.""The Script Module in Nagios is really easy to use and is really cost efficient."

"Nutanix Prism's dashboard is very simple, and you don't need much knowledge to use it.""Resource monitoring is the most valuable feature.""For me, the speed of cloning virtual machines and the hyper-convergence feature are the most valuable aspects of the solution.""The most valuable features are the dashboards.""We were impressed with Nutanix, overall. Some of the other main drivers for our switch to it were the simplicity of setting up our Nutanix clusters, ease of management, and that their support is very respected. There is an overall ease of use, compared to VMware. I'm sold on their product.""By using virtualization, we are saving on the cost of hardware.""We can also manage our disaster recovery plan from a single console.""The features that I have found most valuable are its storage flexibility, linear scalability, and perhaps ease of use and powerful support."

Cons
"The product uses the backend as Perl and could be modified to a more lightweight solution like what's being offered by other vendors.""The reporting structure could be more streamlined.""I would like a much easier GUI so that I can delete events and logs, which will free up a lot of space.""Improve the documentation, examples, and best practices, therefore users can understand how to do things.""There's room for improvement in the visibility, and in the ability to extract information. Stuff like this should be more simple.""The technical support is variable - sometimes I get answers, but most of my tickets go unanswered.""The interface could be more user-friendly.""They need more documentation for the plugins."

More Nagios XI Cons →

"The solution could be a bit more user-friendly. The dashboard and configuration should be much easier to use.""In the next release, I would like the ability to browse data stores.""I would like more insights about virtual machines. It would be helpful to have more detailed information about resource allocation and usage, so we can distribute resources and reassign them more efficiently.""The pricing could be improved.""Nutanix Prism needs more flexibility commercially and more flexibility with their licensing. Currently they're very fixed on their licensing model, for example, it's based on terabyte calculation.""I would like to see the capability to use FC SAN storage.""There are some things that you can only do via the command line. Over the years that I've been using Nutanix, they've slowly integrated those into Prism, but they're still trying to catch up with a solution that has been around longer, like VMware.""The initial setup is extremely complex. I am Nutanix Certified, so I had the ability, but there were still things that we weren't trained in. They mandate—not recommend, but mandate—having an approved installer do it, and it was a very painful process. The installer that we took from CDW was not good, in the extreme. I had to go back to Nutanix directly and get all the problems fixed."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
