We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We selected Apache Hadoop because it is not dependent on third-party vendors.""Apache Hadoop is crucial in projects that save and retrieve data daily. Its valuable features are scalability and stability. It is easy to integrate with the existing infrastructure.""The best thing about this solution is that it is very powerful and very cheap.""The ability to add multiple nodes without any restriction is the solution's most valuable aspect.""The most valuable features are powerful tools for ingestion, as data is in multiple systems.""What I like about Apache Hadoop is that it's for big data, in particular big data analysis, and it's the easier solution. I like the data processing feature for AI/ML use cases the most because some solutions allow me to collect data from relational databases, while Hadoop provides me with more options for newer technologies.""The tool's stability is good.""Its integration is Hadoop's best feature because that allows us to support different tools in a big data platform."

"The parallel load features mean that Greenplum is capable of high-volume data loading in parallel to all of the cluster segments, which is really valuable.""The message routing is the most valuable feature. It is effective and flexible.""RabbitMQ provides access to SDKs for development and the ability to raise and log tickets if we encounter issues. We can integrate RabbitMQ using various languages like Java or Python using the provided SDKs.""We chose Greenplum because of the architecture in terms of clustering databases and being able to have, or at least utilize the resources that are sitting on a database.""The security is great.""It is easy to use. The addition of more queues and more services can be managed very easily.""Companies can scale the solution, so long as they have server room.""With VMware Tanzu Greenplum, one can make a huge database table and analyze the queries by adding in the SQL command. Some hint or command for the query goes over the multi-parallel execution."

Cons
"Since it is an open-source product, there won't be much support.""The solution could use a better user interface. It needs a more effective GUI in order to create a better user environment.""What could be improved in Apache Hadoop is its user-friendliness. It's not that user-friendly, but maybe it's because I'm new to it. Sometimes it feels so tough to use, but it could be because of two aspects: one is my incompetency, for example, I don't know about all the features of Apache Hadoop, or maybe it's because of the limitations of the platform. For example, my team is maintaining the business glossary in Apache Atlas, but if you want to change any settings at the GUI level, an advanced level of coding or programming needs to be done in the back end, so it's not user-friendly.""The main thing is the lack of community support. If you want to implement a new API or create a new file system, you won't find easy support.""I would like to see more direct integration of visualization applications.""I mentioned it definitely, and this is probably the only feature we can improve a little bit because the terminal and coding screen on Hadoop is a little outdated, and it looks like the old C++ bio screen. If the UI and UX can be improved slightly, I believe it will go a long way toward increasing adoption and effectiveness.""The solution is not easy to use. The solution should be easy to use and suitable for almost any case connected with the use of big data or working with large amounts of data.""The integration with Apache Hadoop with lots of different techniques within your business can be a challenge."

More Apache Hadoop Cons →

"It doesn't have any GUI-based monitoring tools.""Tanzu Greenplum's compression for GPText could be made more efficient.""The installation is difficult and should be made easier.""I’d like this dashboard to use web sockets, so it would actually be in real time. It would slightly increase debugging, etc.""We would like to see Greenplum maintain a closer relationship with and parity to features implemented in PostgreSQL.""They need to enhance integration with other Big Data products... to integrate with Big Data platforms, and to open a bi-directional connection between Greenplum and Big Data.""If you're outside IP address range, the clustering no longer has all the features which is problematic.""They should add more analytics. Their documentation could also be improved so that I don't have to bother my co-workers and tech support so often."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Do take into consider that data storage and compute capacity scale differently and hence purchasing a "boxed" / 'all-in-one" solution (software and hardware) might not be the best idea."
  • "There are no licensing costs involved, hence money is saved on the software infrastructure."
  • "This is a low cost and powerful solution."
  • "The price of Apache Hadoop could be less expensive."
  • "If my company can use the cloud version of Apache Hadoop, particularly the cloud storage feature, it would be easier and would cost less because an on-premises deployment has a higher cost during storage, for example, though I don't know exactly how much Apache Hadoop costs."
  • "We don't directly pay for it. Our clients pay for it, and they usually don't complain about the price. So, it is probably acceptable."
  • "The price could be better. Hortonworks no longer exists, and Cloudera killed the free version of Hadoop."
  • "We just use the free version."

  • "The pricing is okay."
  • "It is the best product with best fit for price/performance customer objectives."
  • "Pricing is good compared to other products. It's fine."
  • "This is an open source solution."
  • "We are using the open-source version of this solution."
  • "are using the open-source version, which can be used free of cost."
  • "The pricing for RabbitMQ is reasonable. It is worth the cost."
  • "On a scale of one to five, with five being the most competitive pricing, I would rate this solution as a four."

    Overview
The Apache Hadoop project develops open-source software for reliable, scalable, distributed computing. The Apache Hadoop software library is a framework that allows for the distributed processing of large data sets across clusters of computers using simple programming models. It is designed to scale up from single servers to thousands of machines, each offering local computation and storage. Rather than rely on hardware to deliver high-availability, the library itself is designed to detect and handle failures at the application layer, so delivering a highly-available service on top of a cluster of computers, each of which may be prone to failures.

VMware Tanzu is a robust platform tailored for data warehousing, complex analytics, BI applications, and predictive analytics. It excels in scalability, performance, and parallel processing, enhancing data handling efficiency. Users report significant productivity improvements and streamlined operations, making it ideal for comprehensive data solutions.
