We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Starwind made it easy to deploy fully redundant, highly available storage at a low cost.""VSAN works great; it's very easy to install, configure, and manage.""It's quite easy to manage.""The virtual tapes can be uploaded to the object storage of your choice with object locking/governance which gives you an extra layer of protection.""StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind.""The most valuable feature is the fact that the nodes are Active/Active, and allow us to do upgrades on any node without any downtime.""StarWind Virtual SAN (vSAN) offers a significant breadth of features.""It's very easy to resize disks and they show up in VMware almost instantly."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"Our storage and IT are now at an enterprise level with all the necessary controls and restrictions being enacted.""The HA, which means I have a copy of the VMs always available, and the moment a VM is down, the system tries to power it on again.""The provisioning is very fast. It’s not a problem for us to achieve the goals of the client.""We like the fact that the hyper-converged infrastructure provides a simple to grow, easy to configure platform.""The HPE Hyper Converged solution is used in a hybrid cloud configuration. We assess the disk space and partition additional capacity.""It is a stable solution...Those who want flexibility, ease of use, and a simple support system can opt for HPE.""The solution has good backup resolution updates.""Hyper Converge is easier to manage and performs better than traditional infrastructure."

"The technical support is very helpful and answers questions whenever we have issues with the product.""There is no in-depth config involved nor third-party needed, saving us time and money.""Updating the product has been very easy.""The assurance that my systems would not suffer a performance drop no matter where they are is valuable. I do not need any extra hardware.""The cover points feature in VxRail is remarkable. It's unique. It has an intervention failover system as well as an automatic failover system, reaching clusters existing in VxRail. This makes all files act as a single file with a large and huge resource, and, of course, with customized administration, configuration, and resources. It provides automatic failover for redundancy and data recovery.""The solution is stable and reliable. This is one of the main reasons why we purchased this solution.""Cost-effective and easy to install.""Offers zero-day deployment"

Cons
"I'd love to see more clarification for us folks who are smart enough to do some damage yet not smart enough to use CLI.""The gathering of monthly consumption and performance reports for future dissemination to concerned parties is very important. Unfortunately, StarWinds vSAN doesn't offer this functionality.""I would like to see more monitoring and alert tools.""While we had little to no issues in setting up StarWind and received excellent support from the StarWind technicians, we would have appreciated a clearer guideline for a setup with the free version of StarWind Management Console or, in other words - for the setup with the PowerShell.""I had issues locating the documentation that applied to my version of StarWind vSAN.""If there was one feature I would like to see it would be a built-in subsystem for managing UPS backups shutdown procedures providing a way to initiate VM shutdown on all host servers, shut down the host servers, then put the fault-tolerant mirroring in standby, and finally shut down the StarWind SANs.""Feature-wise we are only waiting for the release of a "planned disaster" feature that would allow us to patch a hypervisor node without having to take the full storage offline.""While it is possible to implement disk encryption in StarWind using Windows Bitlocker, such a solution can be a little tricky to manage."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The software version on the HC380s we are using is version 1. It does not support spanned vCenter which we use since we have multiple sites.""In my country, the biggest issue is probably pricing.""In the Hyper Converged environment, some of the brands only support the OS VMware and not Hyper-V from Microsoft or even Red Hat or KVM.""The price can be improved. We would like to see support for some open source virtualization technology like for example KVM.""Data protection and optimization: It is really weak. They do not offer deduplication or compression.""One of the things that can be improved is that today, is supporting VMware, maybe as a hypervisor. But it would be good to have an open kind of platform for other hypervisors, maybe. Like Nutanix is doing, it's very open.""The solution needs to add a module or plugin of vCenter for clear monitoring and insights.""Installation and setup could be easier."

More HPE Hyper Converged Cons →

"They need to keep upgrading the environment and improving automation so that the solution keeps getting better and better.""The cost is quite high. It's a very expensive solution to run.""The configurations of VxRail can be difficult. However, it has improved in the newer version. From version 6 to 7, there has been a lot of changes.""In the next release, maybe they could add in integration with the hyper-cloud so it will be easier to do the movement up and back to the cloud in order to scale in and scale out.""It should not be deployed on one hypervisor. There should be multiple hypervisors supported like Hyper-V or KVM.""One challenge customers face with VxRail is the high cost of scalability. The price is higher if they want to add memory or capacity after purchasing the tool for three or five years. Each drive and RAM module is licensed separately, making the architecture costly. It would benefit Dell to review this licensing model and make it more cost-effective and flexible for customers.""I would like it to tier to the cloud effectively, making sure that cold data can be pushed out to some sort of Bitbucket.""In the version that I was working with, the integrations are in need of improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It could be cheaper, everything could be cheaper."
  • "With this solution, I buy everything together, pre-packaged, pre-installed, and in just 15 minutes, it's installed."
  • "The price per value compared to other solutions, like Nutanix and SimpliVity. (We made the deal before approval of HPE SimpliVity deal)."
  • "Pricing with Dell EMC is double the price which I paid for HPE. However, in the end, Dell EMC is double in performance. This is not an apple to apple comparison though, as I have a four node from Dell EMC and a three node."
  • "It is an expensive solution, however. If they could adjust the pricing, that would be helpful."
  • "The solution is too expensive for our customers. The pricing should be lower."
  • "The solution is expensive - not only the hardware costs but server costs too. And the more you scale, the more expensive it gets."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
  • More HPE Hyper Converged Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "There is a permanent vSAN license included since it is required, but vCenter\ESXi host licensing should be validated in the purchase process."
  • "Most of hyper-converged solutions require additional licenses for the virtualization layer (like VMware)."
  • "Be mindful of your storage needs now and for the future."
  • "Compare the VxRail product to Nutanix. Nutanix has more features, but its pricing is higher."
  • "Compare it to what you spent on your last solution."
  • "We most likely pay yearly for support. The cost was justified by now because it stays up and I don't have to constantly open tickets. I probably rebooted the system once or twice. We haven't replaced any discs in the storage, we haven't had to do any disc replacements, so it just runs. You pay a little more but you cut down on the maintenance."
  • "The price is a little bit on the higher side but the system and management are so quick and easy that it's worth it for the customer."
  • "We were expecting Dell EMC to bring us something that would work very quickly and easily, but also be at a reasonable price point, and they did."

What is our primary use case?

HPE Hyper Converged handles all the network setup for my servers and data. My experience is in SMBs.

How has it helped my organization?

Before we bought the HPE Hyper Converged servers, we had scattered systems and servers. Our data was scattered. When the solution came into place, we were able to connect all our data and organize it in one place. Now, our storage and IT are at an enterprise level with all the necessary controls and restrictions being enacted. We will also be using the HPE Hyper Converged solution for simulations going forward once we install SAP.

    What is most valuable?

The performance is robust for HPE Hyper Converged. We have been underutilizing the storage. Though, we have almost consumed 70 percent of the storage, and I can access my data whenever I want without searching all over the place for it. In comparison, the VxRail is better in resource utilization and performance. It is also faster. It automatically will detect anything and configure anything. Learning VxRail is easier, as everything is native and linked together.

    What needs improvement?

The storage efficiency is weak and needs to be improved. However, I do not think HPE is planning to improve it at this time. They will probably look to EOL it, because HPE SimpliVity has resolved this issue, but at a higher price tag. To resolve this issue with HPE Hyper Converged, I will buy a backup appliance, then I will shift my data which I am not using often…

VxRail is an all-in-one solution: "You don't have to worry too much about the hardware and you don't have to work on integrating a storage device. We instead have this as an all-in-one solution and everything is available as a box."

VxRail is remarkable: “The cover points feature in VxRail is remarkable. It's unique. It has an intervention failover system as well as an automatic failover system, reaching clusters existing in VxRail…

VxRail is a powerful performer: “...VxRail delivers a very high number of IOPS for a hybrid configuration or an all-flash configuration. The processors that are available in the Xeon family are very powerful. They are multi-core with typically 2 gigahertz, 2.4 gigahertz, or higher frequency, so the performance is very much appreciated.”
