Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most important feature is that everything can be controlled using a single console.""It is much more scalable and flexible than everything else in the market.""We now have the capability to recover a virtual machine without relying on the NFS system, but instead are able to use certain features provided by Commvault.""We use the solution for cloud and data backup.""I like the product because of its simplicity and the fact that it provides one single interface for managing everything, including storage, data, and policies.""The most valuable feature of Metallic is its flexibility and user-friendly.""The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms""The return points are very valuable."

"It's not easy to scale it.""The backup feature and recovery option are good because they allow the instant recovery of Hyper-V nodes and files.""The ability to back up both physical and virtual appliances under one roof.""The most valuable feature of Unitrends for me is the automated feedback""Replication to Forever Cloud.""It is a quick and easy way to organize my backups and to keep track of them.""The ability to backup both physical and virtual machines, along with having an appliance store the backups locally instead of on a file server, NAS, or SAN.""Backup/archive to multiple locations."

Cons
"The reporting could be improved because the reports we get from our partner aren't sufficient. It isn't very detailed. I'm not sure if it's an issue with our partner or Metallic. They do a full backup on Monday and incremental backups throughout the week. However, we don't get detailed reports about the size of the incremental backups. The report just tells us whether a backup was successful.""The interface could be improved because it has two different consoles.""I think there is room for improvement with the reports. They are a little poor.""The solution's breadth and depth of cloud support are good, but could be better. Some cloud features that are common-sense, especially on AWS, are not completely integrated yet in the product. They are a work-in-progress.""In an upcoming release, the reports could be better.""If I were to ask them to work on something, it would be the fidelity of the alerts that occur. They should tell me if it is a real event or not. It is easy for it to identify that something hit it but give me more information. They can build AI into the engine so that I get better output from an alert to tell me if I should really be interested in that or not.""I would like them to keep working on the new web interface to migrate out of the old interface because the old interface is a bit complex. It was driving customers away because of the complexity. If they migrate everything (100 percent of the features), this would make the product be perfect.""I need documentation for Azure backups. One expectation that I have is regarding PDF documentation. When I was trying to browse the documentation, I could not locate that."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"Probably the biggest issue I've had is actually paying for the unit, and part of that problem is that they use a third party for the billing.""It would be great to have the job throttle/limit the max number of backups on a single ESXi host.""It could be a little more customizable.""Techs don't see to be well-versed in troubleshooting issues that arise and tickets stay opened for weeks for resolution.""I would like to see more storage options for the free version.""I would like to see the real-time replication process improved, and a zero RPO feature added.""If the interface could be less complex, it is would be great.""Support is great for small simple issues, but anything more difficult, it is hard to get good resolutions without having to badger them and their management."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "Make sure you do the homework to size the solution properly. Buy the Enterprise Plus licensing if you can afford it."
  • "When you purchase initially, get into the program which gives replacement hardware for free when you renew your support agreement."
  • "Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
  • "Talk with the sales guys. They can work with you on the best package."
  • "We found that the cost of Unitrends was about the same as the Dell DR6300. We liked the fact that the Unitrends appliance was all-in-one."
  • "The cost of Unitrends definitely draws you in. The licensing is all included in the appliance, which is a great incentive."
  • "Pricing model constantly changes."
  • "You should be aware how much the monthly costs are to use, what the initial costs for hardware are, and what the options to expand are, if needed."
