Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Restoring is very fast. In testing, I did a restore for a single item from a mailbox. Within a minute, I had the message back in my mailbox. So, it didn't take hours or days. Obviously, there will be a limit. If we suddenly go into DR and have to restore five terabytes of emails for people, then it will take a couple of days, which would be acceptable. For general usage, where we have to do the odd restore, we have never had issues. It happens within minutes.""Complete Data Protection is convenient because you can manage various types of databases, and it's pretty easy to set it up.""This product has allowed us to recover data when we've had issues.""The user interface is very easy to navigate.""Well documented SQL views and customizable reports, together with scripts and workflows provides ability to automate processes and ensure proper controls are in place.""The rate of duplication is great.""The solution’s user interface for managing the on-prem environment is good.""It runs all the tests and emails us the reports. We take daily, weekly, and monthly snapshots, and I integrate the storage snapshot scripts with the Commvault workflow. The Commvault workflow runs all the scripts and sends us the reports. It also features cloud-side reports and workflows. Commvault has many tools for backing up, restoring, and archiving things, but we use another service for our archives."

"It made the DR process a lot faster and easier for recovery after we were familiar with the product operation.""VMware SRM is very effective between two sites with identical twin storage, you can have synchronization between the two sites.""The most valuable feature of the solution is that you can independently run the disaster recovery without disturbing the production instances.""It eliminates the need for complex compliance requirements, making it a highly effective solution.""The replication is the solution's most valuable feature. If we have some issues on the VM in the main site we can migrate it to another site automatically.""The most valuable feature is disaster recovery testing.""The most valuable feature is the integration with our Nutanix environment.""The solution can be deployed in a couple of hours."

Cons
"This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.""The local support could be improved.""You need quite a lot of human resources to maintain a Commvault environment, to keep it operational. Also, it would be nice to if there were an easier way set up some Commvault components.""Commvault HyperScale X could improve by allowing backups of the storage area network (SAN).""You can't change Metallic's retention policies without contacting the Commvault support team.""In an upcoming release, the reports could be better.""Commvault should keep and continue to develop the Java GUI.""Commvault is complex even if the product has comprehensive solutions and covers pretty much every technology out there. There's no unified way to manage all of the products on one single console."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"There are many functionality problems with the product currently. It is also slow and unstable.""An improvement for SRM would be better interface compatibility with other products.""There needs to be better stability during heavy capacity in future releases.""It would be good if this solution could integrate configuration management software such as Chef Infra.""SRM may hit some OS issues related to IP changes, but they are usually OS related, especially in the 2008 realm.""The administration guides can be complicated and difficult to use, so it would be helpful if it was made easier.""The user experience could be more friendly.""It would be better if we could get more reporting features in VMware SRM."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

VMware SRM (Site Recovery Manager) is a business continuity and disaster recovery solution that is part of the vSphere virtualization suite. It helps you plan, test, and run the recovery of virtual machines between a protected vCenter Server site and a recovery vCenter Server site. VMware SRM aims to minimize data loss and system downtime by letting you automate backups and orchestrate the recovery of entire VMware storage systems. VMware SRM is offered on-premises and on the AWS cloud.

VMware SRM is most commonly used for:

    • Disaster recovery
    • Disaster avoidance
    • Data center migrations
    • Site-level load balancing
    • Maintenance testing for enterprise applications

As a disaster recovery tool, VMware SRM:

    • Provides replication technology.
    • Supports policy-based management of backup programs.
    • Lets you run non-disruptive testing of disaster recovery plans.

    VMware SRM Key Features

Some of VMware SRM’s key features include:
Good scalability and stability, fast and reliable recovery, automated orchestration workflows, automated recovery of network and security settings, non-disruptive recovery testing, orchestrated cross-vCenter vMotion, stretched storage support, and self-service provisioning.
