We performed a comparison between ITRS Geneos and Prometheus based on real PeerSpot user reviews in five categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.
Comparison Results: Prometheus is the preferred choice over ITRS Geneos due to its integration capabilities, affordability, and flexibility. Despite ITRS Geneos' comprehensive monitoring and alert management solution, it lacks thread-level monitoring and is not as lightweight. Prometheus is highly praised for its fast data storage system, scraping mechanism, and ability to extract data from multiple sources. It is also free and has a good return on investment, making it a valuable investment for monitoring needs.
"This solution has helped provide relief to existing Level 2 teams, allowing them to focus efforts on in-depth problem analysis."
"The flexibility of the product is most valuable. It is highly customizable. If you put your mind to it and think of something you could do, there's a good possibility you can get it integrated within the console, if it's not readily available. The simplicity or ease of customization has been valuable."
"The Netprobe is so lightweight compared to the agents that most monitoring tools use. It's really superior to the competition. The agent that is used by almost every competitive tool takes a lot more system resources. It's slower and it requires a greater effort and more compromises in terms of security to install on the monitored servers. With Geneos, because it lives outside the code, it is far easier and far less taxing on the monitored systems."
"One thing we're utilizing in Geneos is the Gateway-SQL. That's really helpful for us. Using Gateway-SQL, we are able to merge two different views into one. Suppose we have to check something in the log and that we have to check something in the database and do a comparison before publishing a result. We can achieve that using Gateway-SQL."
"In my experience, being able to monitor our databases is a valuable feature as we can create our own queries and aren't reliant on the in-built ones."
"The biggest benefit of Geneos is the fact that we can clearly see, if we have an alert, where that alert has come from. We can see the data around that alert and anything that might be relevant is also shown. We can very easily right-click and see why we've received that alert. That's the best part about it, that you've got all the data there with the alerting."
"It's also easy to implement. The implementation of Geneos is very easy and interesting. It's not complicated. It's very quick to implement. The installation is very easy. There are many topics about ITRS Geneos that explain more about the features of the function of Geneos."
"The ability to build integrations to tools that are not monitored out of the box is the most valuable feature."
"It is highly valuable as it serves as the foundation for our infrastructure monitoring tools."
"Prometheus gives us high availability automatically."
"The sky is the limit because the solution is a flexible open box that can be used vastly to do anything you need to monitor applications."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The product’s scalability is valuable."
"The solution helps us to scale our products and services, and it helps me by gathering those metrics."
"The dashboard is very valuable."
"The most valuable features of Prometheus for metrics collection and monitoring are its stability, robustness, and rich set of features."
"I would really like to see something from the Geneos side to set up automated reporting from ITRS. We have to send reporting to management every day. To do that we have to check the dashboard and then we have to report whether everything is fine or not. In the future, I want something, some reporting kind of feature in ITRS, where it can collect all the data and mention what is green, what is amber, what is red in a report."
"Geneos' application monitoring could be improved a lot. Products like AppDynamics and Dynatrace provide the process thread-level monitoring, but Geneos lacks these capabilities."
"They have the Webslinger solution where you can see when something is alerting. It's a little bit cumbersome."
"Currently, it is difficult to monitor secure websites using SSL or with SSO enabled."
"We all look at the same things - CPU, disk space, paging stats, service status with RAG status on each. That could be provided straight out, saving significant time."
"A lightweight version which could host more than 100 gateways, as we can see slowness while loading all our gateways."
"For the last year or two, I've been asking the vendor about the mobile app. This is something that probably everyone asks when they see the tool and they see how powerful it is. If there is any mobile app for this or if there is any way this tool can be more easily accessible other than having a big client installed, it would be great. I know you can build dashboards, et cetera, but there is no quick and easy way. I should be able to download an app, log in, and see my status. That will put this product above everything else out there. I believe it's on their roadmap."
"ITRS have started to make some major changes that we haven't taken on board yet, in the creation of dashboards and more visibility of the metrics that we collect. At the moment, that's something that's lacking, but I know they have addressed it. Still, it’s not that easy to create stuff to help with visibility and dashboarding in Geneos."
"The simplicity of the query language could be improved. The current query language is not easy to work with."
"Its documentation could be clearer to understand."
"Prometheus has a learning curve when setting it up. It definitely requires a little bit more hands-on than other solutions. It is an open source solution which means you do need to go through and read the literature that they have online for setting it up. The setup could be made easier."
"The scalability must be improved."
"The interface is not particularly user-friendly and that could be improved."
"Prometheus can definitely improve its visualization. For example, the matrices represented in Prometheus do not have a very good visualization on their dashboard."
"If you are not quite technical, it can be pretty hard to understand the way it works and how to query data in Prometheus."
"I would like to see improvement in the analysis tools and customization features."
