We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"SharePoint and emailing are two technologies that are very widely used by all employees.""The product's initial setup phase was straightforward.""We are satisfied with technical support.""It is definitely user-friendly, and I like the flexibility.""The installation process is very straightforward.""With Power BI and Power Applications you can do a lot of our automation within IT. It makes everything much quicker.""The product is very flexible.""I definitely like the user interface."

"We can now share to team members by MS Teams and assign planners to follow and update statuses in a single platform.""Our staff found it simpler, as they did not have to work within a classification system.""The product makes it easy to manage lists, forms, searching, and security. One of the most valuable features is its integration with Active Directory.""The product provides flexibility in collaboration.""It keeps our company organized and everything is in one place.""SharePoint has made things easier with the increased functionality for building the portals, microsites, and total integration with Microsoft categories.""I do like the collaboration around documents. The versioning history has proven useful in some instances as well.""The most valuable features are the Integrations, web site, and search."

Cons
"It should be more affordable.""There are sometimes problems with incompatibility issues with other types of software.""It's still not fully consistent among all the platforms running on Windows and IOS. It's getting better and better, but there's still a lot of consolidation or integration work to be done.""I would like to see a connection between their planner board, and a project for the web would be better.""It would be ideal if the product offered more integration capabilities with non-Microsoft solutions.""Microsoft needs to enhance its part in service management. I believe they have a product called Orchestrator, it does not get the same benefits and functionality as the rest of the solutions such as Dynamics or Office 365. They can improve by providing more integration with other solutions to cover the full business spectrum of needs, this would be a great benefit.""Occasionally, it does go down, however, for the most part, it's fine.""Sometimes, it tries to be a little bit too clever in preempting things that you want to do. The settings can be pretty complicated. It has the desktop version and the cloud version. You can have settings in the cloud version that are impacting your desktop version, but you don't know because you can't see the settings like rules and other things. So, they need to think about the experience. It should be the same if you log in to the cloud or if you log in via desktop."

"Needs improvement on the user interface.""SharePoint Online could improve the user interface and when modifying any of the user interfaces can be challenging. Additionally, there are challenges with the detail in the analytics user interface and the overall customization could improve.""I would like a simpler, more cost-effective solution for connecting data sources with workflows and BI tools, or data mining tools.""SharePoint’s scalability could be improved.""There's a challenge with desktop applications synchronizing with online documents in real-time. If someone is working on a document in the desktop version of Excel, for example, and someone else is editing the same document online, the changes won't sync immediately. That's the only real challenge we've encountered.""Integration needs to be more straightforward, particularly with Azure. SharePoint also needs a more comprehensive introductory course for users.""Processing data from multiple site collections is not easy as they reside in different databases.""Using SharePoint is difficult."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Depending on which plan you purchase, there are a plethora of applications available to you."
  • "Compared to buying a license, it is much cheaper and a good buy."
  • "We do monthly billing, however, I'm not sure what the exact costs are. We may pay around $1,000/month. We started using the Microsoft Teams and we've started doing the conference call feature, so that's another $4 an account and we have a few accounts using that right now."
  • "USD $1,250 annually for the standard package."
  • "Pricing can vary a lot due to fluctuations in exchange rates and that is not favorable for planning."
  • "Now you can select different licenses, for example, if somebody doesn't need all of the features, it would cost $8 USD per month and if they didn't need the email application then it would cost $6 USD per month."
  • "It works out to be $12.50 per user per month."
  • "Microsoft 365 Business will be good to have if you have a large organization where you have more than 3000 employees. Other cheaper solutions, like Gmail, are easily available in the market."

  • "As usual, Microsoft’s licensing structures don’t really seem to fit the needs of their products. This leads to always paying for a project you will never use fully or always be adding to."
  • "Licensing can be by server or by seat."
  • "It is very expensive."
  • "The data classification and search elements are cheap."
  • "The replacement costs for it are cheaper if you use only SharePoint."
  • "We have purchased add-ons to handle multiple site collections, form creation, and design."
  • "The cost is expensive, but worthwhile."
  • "The pricing works for us."

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
