Q&A Highlights
Question: Which solution do you prefer: CrowdStrike Falcon or SentinelOne Singularity Complete?
Answer: You should do a test with both solutions for your client. Technically both solutions should perform very well but no one can tell which platform is more "you". That said, the main difference is Overwatch where security staff from CrowdStrike does some threat hunting on your tenant (and that is pricey because there are actual persons doing something for you). S1 does that kind of work only in the fully managed version. But of course, try to hire someone to do that for you. You will have to pay hefty IF you get one to hire in the first place. All other things feature-wise are quite the same with one more well-rounded as the other but what is something one can only tell for themselves. We did a test with both products and we liked CrowdStrike Falcon more. Previous to the test we were leaning more towards S1. But that is what the test installation is for. Get comfortable with a product by trying it out. No one can speak better for the product but the product.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The incident threat response and its ability to facilitate effective remediation against threats are the standout features.""The Endpoint Manager is incredible; it has a very straightforward interface and is exceedingly easy to use. Pulling out and deploying different tags or resources is a simple task across various departments with different levels of security. The notifications are also simple and satisfying; it's great to see the bubble informing us which devices are compliant and which are waiting to update.""Defender XDR has a feature called the timeline that lets you track all activities. It helps a lot with investigations.""We are connected to Microsoft and have every laptop enrolled. This acts as an endpoint. The tool helps me check security and compliance. I can also check what a device is doing.""Advanced hunting is good. I like that. We can drill down to lots of details.""The product is very easy to use.""I like that it's stable. It's been stable for a long time, and Microsoft Defender has done a good job there.""The advantage of Microsoft Defender XDR has over other XDRs in the market is that it's easy to use. You can quickly differentiate between alerts, incidents, devices, software, etc. It's easier to investigate an incident, and you have so many options. You can automate investigations and use playbooks. There's also the live response session, which is something you can't find in any other XDR."

"As long as the machine is connected to the Internet, and CrowdStrike is running, then it will be on and we will have visibility; no VPNing in or making some type of network connection. CrowdStrike always there and running in the background; for us, that is big. We wanted something that could give us data as long as the machines connected to the Internet and be almost invisible to the employees.""The most valuable features of CrowdStrike Falcon include Falcon Fusion workflows and endpoint detection capabilities.""The solution has improved my organization by automating the detection and reporting of unwanted applications so we're aware of them and can respond appropriately.""I like Falcon's threat detection and endpoint investigation features. It's a user-friendly solution.""The malware protection is the most valuable feature of CrowdStrike Falcon.""CrowdStrike Falcon is effortless to use, and it's a cloud-specific platform. You only need to deploy the light agents on the licensed endpoints, and you're ready to work. Your dashboards will tell you the number of the endpoints being protected and the incidents. There are also incident dashboards with alerts that will tell you about the details.""At this point what is most valuable is the interface, which is easy to navigate.""There are two things which customers really like about CrowdStrike. If they buy managed services from CrowdStrike, it offers them detection of security issues in one minute. If you buy their professional services, they offer insurance where you can claim up to $5 million if there's a breach. This is a huge upsell for customers."

"Offers good protection against ransomware.""The most valuable aspect, in any scenario, was the rollback feature.""I like the centralized management with the web dashboard.""I work in vulnerability management, and for me, at the moment, its automation is most valuable. For the SOC team, incident visibility would be most valuable, but for me, it is automation.""It is a good endpoint solution. That's the reason we chose it. We looked at other solutions, such as CrowdStrike, and based on the cost and the services it delivers, it was the better choice.""The customer support for this solution is good.""It is purely cloud-based, meaning you don't need to have something installed, such as a server on-prem. You have cloud management and can access it from anywhere, with integration with SSO, with one click. It's also very lightweight.""I really love how simple and effective the product is. I really love the visibility it gives me into the endpoint. I really love that they open their product to the customer to enhance it with custom-made software, giving you the APIs to program it. Those are all things competitors don't have."

Cons
"The mobile app support for Android and iOS is difficult and needs improvement.""What could be improved in Microsoft 365 Defender is its licensing, e.g. it should be more consolidated and would be good if it has some optimizations. Improving the alerts and notifications, in terms of adding more details, would also be good for this solution.""Microsoft frequently changes the names of its products, sometimes even renaming entire portals or features.""Microsoft 365 Defender does not have a unique package with emerging endpoint security technologies, such as EDR and XDR.""I'd like to see a wider solution that includes not only desktop devices but also other devices, such as servers, storage cabinets, switching equipment, et cetera.""The Defender agent itself is more compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11. Other than these two lines, there are so many compatibility issues. Security is not only about Microsoft. The core technical aspects of it are quite good, but it would be good if they can better support non-Microsoft solutions in terms of putting the agents directly into VMware and other virtualization solutions. There should be more emphasis on RHEL and other operating systems that we use, other than Windows, in the server category.""The only problem I find is that the use cases are built-in. There is no template available that you can modify according to your organization's standards. What they give is very generic, the market standard, but that might not be applicable to every organization.""Defender also lacks automated detection and response. You need to resolve issues manually. You can manage multiple Microsoft security products from a single portal, and all your security recommendations are in one place. It's easy to understand and manage. However, I wouldn't say Defender is a single pane of glass. You still need to switch between all of the available Microsoft tools. You can see all the alerts in one panel, but you can't automate remediation."

More Microsoft Defender XDR Cons →

"I've found that CrowdStrike's technical support could benefit from increased technical expertise.""The content-filtering features for children could be improved. We have young grandchildren aged 12 and 8. My daughter, their mother, wants to keep them from getting in trouble on the net. She looked at all these other solutions from Google, Microsoft, etc., and she couldn't figure out how to make any of those work. I told her that I bet CrowdStrike could handle this. Sure enough, CrowdStrike can do exactly that. It's the same solution that the Defense Department gets. It works, but it's a little complicated to implement. It could be simpler to set the policies.""We'd like to see more integration capabilities.""I have experience with a product called SentinelOne, which has a feature that allows for the customization of query languages. I would like to see such a feature for CloudStrike.""The solution needs to have integration with on-premises security devices and security facilities. That means all the security products, including the perimeter firewall, the DMZ.""I would also like to see the endpoint firewall component produce some level of logging and feedback.""I would love to see more investment in Insight because CrowdStrike have an opportunity to potentially displace some of the vulnerability management vendors with the visibility they can see over time. I want to see them continue to evolve, e.g., what other things can they disrupt which are operational things we have to continue to do as an organization.""The biggest issue with Falcon as a standalone product is it doesn't have very much reporting."

More CrowdStrike Falcon Cons →

"The anti-ransomware technology takes up a lot of disc space.""Something we are looking forward to is the ability of the SentinelOne backend to ingest data from other sources. Now that they are moving to the Singularity data lake, we are looking forward to being able to query data that is not just collected by SentinelOne endpoint agents. We are looking forward to being able to query against all data that we are ingesting into that backend.""The SentinelOne portal is not user-friendly, which is one of its drawbacks.""I would like to have firewall functionality within SentinelOne Singularity Complete.""I would like to see something a little more sophisticated than simply being able to mark a false positive as safe or there's usually just one or two options in certain areas and they're a little rudimentary at this stage.""They have tiers of support like most companies do. For the first three years, we had the top tier of their support and we would get a response from a technician quickly. We didn't have many things we had to ask of them. They would be very quick. We are now one tier down from that. The SLA for us is no longer within an hour or two. It's within half a day or something like that. As far as if I do ask a question of them, it is a little slower than what it used to be. I understand that we're at a lesser tier, but sometimes it feels like that could be a little better. I have to preface that by specifying that we're no longer paying for their top tier support.""The performance could be better. Singularity lags a bit, and it's a resource-hungry application, so it takes a while to load.""Ranger does provide me with visibility of the network, but not completely because the assets it scans are often mistakenly identified regarding what type of device they are."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The solutions price is fair for what they offer."
  • "The price could be better. Normally, the costs depend on the country you're located in for the license. When we were in the initial stage, we went with the E5 license they call premium standard. It cost us around $5.20 per month for four users."
  • "The price of the solution is high compared to others and we have lost some customers because of it."
  • "Microsoft is not competitive with the pricing of the solution. The competitors are able to offer lower discounts. The price of the solution is higher."
  • "We have a lot of problems in Latin America regarding the price of Microsoft 365 Defender, because the relationship between dollars and the money of the different countries, it's is a lot. Many customers that have small businesses say that they would like the solution but it is too expensive. However, large companies do not find the cost an issue."
  • "The most valuable licensing option is expensive, so pricing could be improved. Licensing options for this solution also need to be consolidated, because they frequently change."
  • "Microsoft should provide lower-level licensing options. They should do it in such a way that even an individual could purchase a license, and it should be entirely flexible."
  • "They have moved from a licensing model to pay-per-use... The question is: What happens if, for any reason, there's not enough budget to accept this model? That could be a great problem."

  • "The pricing will depend upon your volume of usage."
  • "I would like them to further reduce the price, because it is quite pricey at the moment."
  • "Purchasing the product through the AWS Marketplace is just a click away. Since we were using the on-premise version of the product, we continued on the cloud by purchasing it through the AWS Marketplace."
  • "I do not have experience with the cost or licensing of the product."
  • "The other administrator and I can log in to check the exact details of what happened, what was running, and what caused the detection. We know exactly what was happening on the end users PC and we can tell if it's something that we actually need or something that's malicious."
  • "We are at about $60,000 per year."
  • "This solution has a very competitive price."
  • "Our company pays approximately US$ 65,000 annually for 900 machines."

  • "The price is competitive, if you compare it with other solutions on the market."
  • "Spend money on the security for the endpoint."
  • "The price for it is very competitive compared to other Next Gen EPP."
  • "The per-seat cost is low, but you have to commit to a certain number of licenses for a year."
  • "The larger count you have, the deeper discount you will receive in your contract."
  • "Our licensing fees are about $5 USD per endpoint, per month."
  • "USD$6 per end point which decreases as end points increase."
  • "Pricing is a bit of a pain point. That's where we have not been able to convince all of our customers to use SentinelOne. The pricing is still on the higher side. It's almost double the price, if not more, of a normal antivirus, such as NOD32, Kaspersky, or Symantec."

Jeff D. who is an Operations Manager at Proton Dealership IT, tells us that "The detection rate for Sentinel One has been excellent and we have been able to resolve many potential threats with zero client impact. The ability to deploy via our RMM allows us to quickly secure new clients and provides peace of mind."

"The most valuable feature varies from client to client but having absolute clarity of what happened and the autonomous actions of SentinelOne are what most people find the most assuring." relates Rae J., Director IR and MDR at a tech services company.
