We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I really like the captive portal feature for our guest network. It has nice VLAN features in terms of separating our network. The anti-virus is also good.""The solution is very, very easy to use.""The solution can scale well.""The notable features that I have found most valuable are that it includes the antivirus, and also IPS, and even SD-WAN.""Using this product makes the VPN seamless and almost invisible to me in the sense that I don't have to think about it.""The IPsec tunnels are very easily created, and quite interoperable with devices from other vendors.""The web filtering facility and application control are the most valuable features from the point of view of our clients. The VPN feature is also quite popular amongst our clients. Two-factor authentication is one of the good features in Fortinet. These features are important for the current scenario of security. Security has become a necessity nowadays. With cyber-attacks becoming more common, protecting an organization's data is one of the major tasks. It is also very stable and scalable, and it is very straightforward to configure. Their technical support is also good.""The solution is very user friendly. The user interface in particular is quite nice."

"The solution provides support for 5G connectivity.""Overall we have found the solution to be satisfactory.""I have been able to connect the solution to many platforms such as Windows, Apple, and Android.""The setup is simple.""There is a lot of information available about routers and how to configure Huawei Routers right now.""The most valuable features for us are NAT, ATS, server capabilities, VPN tunneling, and management.""We use the solution for point-to-point connectivity, aggregation, and radio connectivity on mTLS.""The product is very reasonably priced."

Cons
"It would be ideal if they had some sort of GUI interface for troubleshooting and diagnostics.""The cloud features can be improved.""If they could extend their fabric towards other vendor environments for integration, that would be great.""Usually, we sell the bundle with the UTM or threat management piece with IPS, IDS. Other providers, such as Palo Alto, are ahead in terms of safe functionality. So, for me, delivering truly safe service is probably something that still needs to be improved.""Their software support needs improvement. I would prefer to have better support for bug fixes. Sometimes, we open a ticket, and it is very difficult to get a solution. Specifically, we are not at all happy with their support for load balancing.""Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having a frequent ask questions(FAQ) area for people to receive quick answers to popular questions. Additionally, it would be beneficial to have an SMS notification feature. For example, if you cannot access your email you could receive an SMS message.""I have to say that the initial setup was complex. The deployment took a few days to get set up. Initially, we were using an IPVanish. We switched to this tool since we thought it would be easier. But it turns out it wasn't easier to set up and run.""The reporting in Fortinet FortiGate could improve. Customers are having to purchase additional reporting components. When I have used the Sophos solution it is a complete solution, in Fortinet FortiGate you have to use additional tools to have the features needed."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"In my country we don't have Huawei technology, we only have Huawei routers for ISP. There is no agent for Huawei in Egypt.""Syntax in the implementation process could be easier to understand for a new user or someone who doesn’t have prior experience using the product.""It would be better if the vendor provided support for small enterprises.""The product's pricing could be better.""The solution's technical support could be improved.""The internet speed reduces throughout the day. The tool is not stable.""The internet service for enterprise bundle should be improved.""We have encountered issues while integrating the product with Enterprise Management Systems. Huawei platform is good for Huawei but we face issues when we integrate it with other models."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application.
